Superb Owl

There is, apparently, some sporting event or other today. I suspect it has something to do with Tom Riddle, as the organizers get very touchy when someone tries to actually use the name of the thing. Fortunately, a simple slide of one letter to the left produces Superb Owl, a much more glorious thing to celebrate.

What are your plans for this year's commercial-laden testosterone fest? I'm going to get a pizza this afternoon, work on music, play too much Marvel Puzzle Quest, and wait for the Captain America: The Winter Soldier teaser, for which there was a teaser the other day:

  • TUG, a really fascinating RPG experiment. Seriously, watch the six-minute video on this one and see what you think.
  • Lawless Jerky, small-batch hand-crafted beef jerky with some great-sounding flavors. I'm going for the Hawaiian Teriyaki. Or the American BBQ. Or maybe the Bacon, Salt & Pepper. Only a few hours left on this one.
  • Adventure Maximus, an RPG that both kids and adults can play... and run!
  • Gigabot 3D Printing, wherein you can get your own 3D printer for something near reasonable cost. Another one ending soon.
  • Creating a RepRap 3D printer, so a guy with no prior experience in 3D printing can prove it's not that big or expensive a deal to make your own (and then he'll print you something with it). Ending in just two days.
Any other crowdfunding we should know about?

Because, after all, the cake is a lie.

What's your favorite kind of Pi? I think 3.141592653 slices of apple or raspberry key lime is pretty much perfect (as long as there's not too much crust).

A Superlative Chafing Dish or something.
  • Who's watching?
  • Who's watching for the commercials?
  • Who's watching only the commercials?
  • Who doesn't care?
  • Does anyone care about the Halftime Show?
  • And, most importantly, who's got the best nacho/burger/chili/sloppy joe recipe?
  • (I'm presuming that, if you're getting pizza, you're likely not making it today. 'Cause, FOOTBALLLLLLLLLL! Feel free to prove me wrong and supply your recipe.)
PACKURRRRS!

List night was a lot of fun. Leslie and I met Anne at the only Red Hot & Blue left in Michigan, and devoured excellent barbecue in quantity. Anne couldn't believe how good the biscuits were, and I have sorely missed their dry-rub ribs. Les tried their new Barbecue Meatloaf: a-nom nom nom.

After, Les and I went to the Just One Angel Tour performance in Sterling Heights. The show was a charity for MCrest, which provides help and housing for homeless individuals and families. Christine Lavin, Uncle Bonsai, Don White. Exceptional music and fun.

I got to spend a few minutes with Christine after the concert, and she asked if my glasses slipped down my nose. And then she showed me these Keepons Eyeglass Retainers. They're fairly cool, and I thought some of you who wear glasses might find 'em useful, especially since they're dirt cheap. So, I promised Christine I'd boost the signal, and here 'tis.

What signals do you want to boost today?

Hostess Brands is going out of business.

Utterly stupid. The company would literally rather kill itself off than give their workers a break. They wanted "major wage and benefit concessions". Don't they always?

What's your favorite Hostess brand? Mine's the Snowball. Fortunately, I only have 'em a couple of times a year.

Holy frijoles. Serves me right for paying too much attention to politics. Last night a new season of Top Chef began.

Season Ten. Wow. And Padma's intro has me hooked from the get-go: The chefs will compete in challenges designed by, and restaurants owned by, the judges -- Hugh Acheson, Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang frickin' Puck, and of course Tom Colicchio.

Just downloaded the ep, so I'll post my reaction in comments later.

Life-size Ben Grimm made of pumpkins.

Are you carving pumpkins this year? If so, do you have pictures? If not, why not find some good ones on the web and link us up?

So the CEO of Papa John's pizza is threatening to raise prices because of Obamacare.

It's one of the coldest, most blatant pitches I've ever seen -- "vote for Romney or we'll charge you more".

Nearly all I might have to say on the matter is said at the Daily Kos diary linked above, but there is one more thing that occurs to me: If the price increase is (depending on, I dunno, somethin') between eleven and twenty cents a pizza... does he really think anyone is going to care?

"If we have to pay for health care for all these people, I'm gonna charge you an extra couple of dimes per pizza" seems like a very reasonable trade.

ETA: Yep, that seems to be a common reaction.

Either you get it or you don't.

ETA: To clarify -- I don't get it. White Castle sliders do nothing for me. But a fair number of my friends over the years, including Anne, Cync, and several others, love the dang things, so.

If you hadn't heard yet, there is an indie sandwich shop, Fernando's, right near the Pittsburgh Convention Center where AnthroCon is held every year. The food is cheap and good, and the staff (like those many of the businesses downtown, honestly) is very welcoming toward the Furries. Unfortunately, they were running out of money, and weren't even sure they would be open for this year's Anthro.

So Uncle Kage called in the troops.

It's a wonderful story of love and generosity and community, and you can still get in on it and help Fernando's stay open, ideally for a long, long time. Click here for info about donating.

Finally downloading last night's ep. Go wild, I'll join you later.

Since I didn't get to last week's episode until today, this thread is for both last week and this week. Short form, the chili cook-off was amazing, and very emotional. From their descriptions, all of the chilis sounded great. But Texas-y? Not necessarily.

And, Chris is really paying a little too much attention to Padma. We're beginning to enter stalker territory.

Kick in at your leisure; I'll rejoin you in the morning.
