This weekend I'm missing two conventions I wish I could attend: MuseCon in Chicago and GenCon in Indianapolis. I hope everyone there is having a great time, and I especially wish many, many happies to our own Eric Coleman and Lizzie Crowe, who are celebrating their wedding this weekend at MuseCon! Mwah!

So, I'll be home, working on music that really needs to be finished. Howzabout you?

I'm having musical guests tonight! (Not certain there will actually *be* music, but if I tell you they're [personal profile] cflute and [livejournal.com profile] pocketnaomi, you'll understand!)

A friend's husband's birthday party will be even more festive: he (finally!) got & accepted a job offer this week.

Other than that, see a movie, eat some pizza & clean house.

Meant to say above that it royally sucks that you can't make either con. Been there, done that. I guess I'm the redhead in the userpic. (BTW, she's finally getting an action figure.)

My son is at Gencon. He won an Ennie for Best Blog. I'm thinking of going next year, it looks like it would be fun.

It's hard to describe what Musecon is. They say they're not a sci-fi con but I see a lot of people from other sci-fi cons there. SJ Tucker did a fire dance last night which was awesome. Several people took videos so it could be on YouTube. I'm leaving to go back in half an hour. It's different than other cons I went to so I'm not quite sure what to expect.

The new job has me pretty tired as I get back to the old schedule so I couldn't say late last night. I wouldn't mind staying late tonight for the open filk, but Sunday at 9am is a 2 hour panel about world creation that I want to attend.

Good luck with your projects!

Many thanks, m'friend. I get the impression from the web site, especially the programming, that MuseCon is pretty much what they hoped it would be: a fannish version of a Maker Faire. Creativity in all forms and formats -- music, performance, craft, tech, costuming, spoken and written word, whatever. Which I think is frickin' wonderful.

Congrats to your son! And, it is indeed a hell of a lot of fun. When I first went in 2007, I took one step into the exhibit hall and every single gaming instinct I'd ever had came back in one where-the-hell-have-you-been rush, and they haven't let up yet. :D

I thank you, but it's fine. If I gnashed my teeth about every con I had to miss, I'd be gnashing constantly. Congrats on the friend's husband (whom I presume is also your friend) getting a job, movie & pizza & clean oh my!

Don't know the friend's husband well enough yet to call him a friend -- but probably will soon. (They moved to CA for several years right after the wedding, but are now back in my area.)

His new job might actually be of interest to you: QA with a game company called Zenimax. Apparently everyone starts as QA, but they wanted him because of his (board) game design experience at another company.

ZeniMax!? Heck yeah, I'm interested. They're the folks who own Bethesda, the Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3 people. As in, the best single-player computer role-playing game company in existence.

Cleaning cleaning cleaning...house is a wreck from being out every night this week at church functions.

Maybe a trip to the community pool. Definitely a trip to Borders (going to see if I can get more Spillane or Hammett...)

And MuseCon sounds like fun. May try it out sometime... :-)

The Husband is in Chicago, but not attending MuseCon -- working 13 hours a day, 6 days a week at the newly opened Rivers Casino (the whole reason we moved to Chicagoland).

I'm back home in St. Louis for a week helping [livejournal.com profile] rothesis get her house prepped to sell.

Not exciting, but a good chance to catch up with friends and family I've missed since the move.

For Day 2 of Musecon, I attended the Interplay session with 5 other people. There's an Interplay site if you google it since it's hard to really describe what it is. Then was a panel about preparing for a performance. I never realized how much work you had to do before going on stage and I don't just mean rehearsing. There was a fun panel about writing a comedy sketch, unfortunately someone brought their kid along and the kid did NOT know how to behave and was so disruptive it effectively ruined the panel for me.

I got more guitar experience with the DADGAD panel. This was interesting. The idea is that you adjust your guitar strings so they tune to the above keys and suddenly strumbing some cords becomes a lot easier. I still had problems switching cords due to my inexperience, but I did eventually get better. I can see doing this in the future.

I don't know which was the bigger highlight, the Coleman/Lizzie wedding or Sooj's concert. I never went to a fannish wedding before and it was everything one would expect. A balance of seriousness and humor, tradition and practicality, forgiveness of mistakes, telling it like it is, and short (in comparison to other weddings I've been to). If I ever get married, I would want the same person presiding over it. Only downside is that the couple didn't have mics so we couldn't hear their vows. But I'll grant them their moment of public privacy.

Concert was awesome too. It was preceded by a panel about how all the sound equipment is hooked up. I had one of SJ's CDs (which she was nice enough to autograph earlier) which was used to help adjust the equipment. Everyone else but me could hear a big difference. It helped the concert a great deal and she got a standing ovation.

I'm gtg now, there's a panel about worldbuilding I want to attend and if I leave now I should be on time. Then I think I'm con-ed out. Time to do the grocery shopping and get chores done.

I hit up GenCon on Saturday and hung out with my sister and Marc and Luke and Sara and Carrie and Josh. I'd gotten volunteered by a friend (who is not in the dementia community) to ferry a friend of his to con for the day trip. Come to find out said friend of a friend has been a long-time friend of Dr. Pinkerton of the Consortium of Genius and has just jumped feet first into the community as a whole. Your name was liberally mentioned by said new friend as part of the few things that could've made his first GenCon even better than it was.

Huzzah for how freakin' small the world is.

I had thought it would be miked, but it didn't happen. Neither of us had the presence of mind to talk terribly loud. I intend to post the ceremony once I get the final version (all I have is a draft at the moment).

And that was exactly why I wanted the performance panel, as a sound guy I have worked with too many people who just don't know.

I'm glad you liked Interplay. It was a fun way to start the day.

Arlington Heights. Not as close to the casino as The Husband would have liked, but we found a great apartment that was *mostly* in our price range. Now I just have to find a job! (Interview tomorrow -- wish me luck!)

You have it. Fortunately Arlington Heights is in easy reach of several conventions and Games Plus in Mount Prospect. Plus I believe it's a big stop on the NW train line so it's easier to go downtown.
