There's a segment of the neocon fundamentalists who have decided that Armageddon will start with a war in modern-day Israel, and that it will be that war that will usher in the Rapture. Which is why some segment of that population are so very pro-Israel: because they're waiting for it to start the Final War.
It's a really creepy little meme, if you think about it.
