What's Up, Doc?

The Warner Bros. cartoon "A Wild Hare", directed by Tex Avery, was released today in 1940. This was the first meeting of Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny, and in many ways it was really the first Bugs cartoon.

We could spend all week listing favorite Warner Bros. cartoons, so let's refine it just a bit: What are some of your favorite lines, or exchanges? (We will assume that the entire canon of "Rabbit Season! Duck Season!" is in there, to save space.) I could go on for hours myself; let's try ~~five~~ ~~six~~ seven:

"Yoiks! And away! [WHOM] ... Yoiks! And away! [WHOM] ... yoiks [WHOM] yoiks [WHOM] yoi[WHOM] yoik[WHOM]...."
"... No, I'd better not look. I just might be in there."
"I may be a craven little coward... but I'm a greeeeeeeedy craven little coward!"
"Dere! You're nice and clean! Although your face... looks... like it... may have... gone through... a... ma... chine."
"Oh, Bwunhiwda, you'we so wovewy!" "Yes, I know it! I can't help it!" "Oh, Bwunhiwda, be-he my wuuuuv!"
"'Wile E. Coyote: Super Genius'. I like the way that rolls out. 'Wile E. Coyote: Super Genius'!

Golden Age Chuck Jones' animated facial expressions. Particularly perturbed ones.

Years ago there was this tribute to loony tunes. I must have been like 8-9 at the time.

They had celebrities like David bowie and Jeff goldblum talking about the characters like they were real people

It was pretty cool

*chortle* Oh yes, the Rabbit Season Duck Season exchange is gold, but I also must love me some Pronoun Trouble. :D

And I gotta love me some Yosemite Sam as well:

"Well, I speak LOUD! And I carry a BIGGER STICK! And I use it, too! *WHAM*"

• "Awfully THPORTING of the little black duck."

• "Hey, were did my little friend go?" "Huh! Dis you have to SEE to believe."

And that's only scratching the surface....

Still favorites, and so far unmentioned:
"YEOW! Mah biscuits are burnin', mah biscuits are burnin'!"
"I knew I should have taken that left turn at Albequerque."
"... and I will love him and pet him and name him George!"
"Ya know? I used to have a litt-el friend. But... he don't move no more!"

My all time favorite Bugs/Elmer line is something that was never actually said, but merely postulated. Some LA fans (I think LA fans) were casting Lord of the Rings with Warner Brother characters, notably Elmer Fudd as Strider. And his great line would have been, "Woe is me! The wing is wost! Come back, you wascal Wingwaiths!"

Oh, and while we're talking musical Bugs quotes:

* "My gal is a high-born stepper! Ginger, with salt and pepper! She's a fancy stepper when she dances, go and see 'er as she skippers and prances! My gal! Don't do much talkin'! Dances! Even when she's walkin'! One and two and three and four, she dances all day long!"

* "Oh carrots are divine, you get a dozen for a dime, it's maaaaagic! They fry, a song begins! They roast, and I hear violins, it's maaaaagic!"

* "Oh give me a hooooome, where the buffalos roooooam, and the deeeeeer and the antelopes play (and the rabbits!)"

* "I'm lookin' over a three-leaf clover, that I overlooked be-three!"

And hell, the entire squaredance sequence at the end of "Hillbilly Hare". :D

Daffy has some great musical lines as well:

* "She was an acrobat's daughter, she swung by her teeth from a noose! But on one matinee, her bridgework gave way and she flew through the air like a goose!"

I think my other huge favorite Bugs exchange has got to be between him and the bull in the bullfighting cartoon:

Bugs: "What a gulli-BULL! What a nin-COW-poop!"
Bull: *clobbers him with hoof*

I think my favorite is when Bugs and Yosemite Sam were both running for mayor. Bugs quotes Teddy's "Big Stick" line and Sam retorts with, "I speak LOUDLY and carry a BIGGER stick and I use it to," then hits Bugs over the head with his stick.

"I'm going to blow it up. It blocks my view of Venus."

Ah, yes, the Martian...

"There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom. What happened to the Earth-shattering kaboom?"

Ho! Ha ha! Guard! Turn! Perry! Dodge! Spin! Ha! Thrust! [whack!]

I'm going to bobble the exact dialogue, but the bit that goes:

"Of course you realize this violates the law of gravity."

"That's all right, I never studied law!"

I think this was done at least twice, once with Bugs and once (via signs) with Wile E. and the Roadrunner.

I'm planning on having this as a tattoo (with the screwball flag extended, of course!!) in the not-too-distant future.

Then there are the additional lines from "Robin Hood Daffy,"

"With my trusty quarterstaff!" "Actually, it's a buck-and-a-quarter quarterstaff, but I'm not telling him that."

Daffy, fighting with his $1.25 quarter staff "Ho! HaHa! Guard! Turn! Parry! Dodge! Spin! Ha! Thrust!" (quarter staff bounces off log, bending his beak)

"Really, I AM Robin Hood!!" *WHAM*
"Suuuuuuure you are..."
