Dancing With The Star Wars
May. 23rd, 2011 04:29 pm2011 Disney World Star Wars Weekend Dance-Off video is up. The Vader one is okay -- not many moves, but just the notion of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" blasting out at the Hollywood Studios makes me smile. The Chewbacca one, however, is aces, as is the whole-show vid.
I was just discussing this with Les earlier today: Next time you go to Disney World, what do you need to see? The answer changes with who your travelling companions would be, but there are a few constants -- I need to see the new queue for the Haunted Mansion; I've only been on Soarin' once; it's been a number of years since I saw the Country Bear Jamboree; and I haven't been on the Safari at the Animal Kingdom since the very first trip there.

May the 25th Be With You
May. 4th, 2011 12:52 pmI like the pun, but I think the real Star Wars Day is the anniversary of the release of the first/fourth movie back in 1977. On the other hand, Star Wars has indeed become ubiquitous enough that saying "May The Fourth Be With You" will elicit a groan of recognition from even the most Mugglish among us.
Which Star Wars story is your favorite? Film, animated series, episode of a series, book, fan fic, fan film, comic, parody, whatever. If you've got a link, please provide it.

STAR WARS EP 1: THE PHANTOM MENACE in 3D
Mar. 4th, 2011 07:28 pmI am so not there.
Now you're just grabbing for all the fucking money you can, George. Remember saying that, after Ep 3, you wanted to make some "little films"? I do. I remember thinking at the time that you would never again make a little film, because after all these years of riding at the head of a marketing juggernaut the likes of which the world has never seen, you couldn't stop.
George? Let me clue you in: A lot of people aren't all that thrilled with 3D technology when it works properly. The retro-fitted shit has destroyed movie franchises in the cradle. And you want to give us Jake Lloyd and Jar-Jar in 3D? That 3D?
Now, more than ever, George Lucas needs someone to tell him "no".
Sigh. Okay. If you could make a favorite book or comic or TV show or animated series into a 3D movie, a good 3D movie, would you? And, if so, which one? I could deal with a done-right tale of Babylon 5 during the Shadow war -- just for the spaceships. And maybe Claudia Christian.

Astronomy Picture Of The Day
Feb. 21st, 2011 06:33 pmStraight-up gorgeous.
Any good space or nature photos we should see? (And, yes, I've already seen the Jessica Rabbit as Slave Leia.)

The Princess Bride... With Lightsabers
Dec. 8th, 2010 05:39 amExcellent. Unfortunately, the vid's apparently blocked from some countries -- the old "due to copyright" thing.
Oh my.
What kinda cosplay are you into lately, or thinking about getting into? I have the suspicion that, before it's all said and done, Anne's going to get me into the regal robes of Edward, Emperor of Brittania, from Code Geass. And of course I should work on a Master Payne costume one of these years.

A Is For Ackbar
Dec. 4th, 2010 08:30 amThe cutest Star Wars alphabet you ever did see. You can donate $15 for a book version (already into 2nd printing), to help with the artist's son's college fund. No, I don't know if it's authorized.
Tchotchkes From Hell

Numerous sources link to the news that George "I Want To Do Small Films For Awhile" Lucas is re-releasing the Star Wars flicks in 3D, starting with Ep 1: The Pantene Menace in 2012, which I'm sure was foretold in the Maian calendar.
maiac, could you verify...?
My buddy
hughcasey hopes that at least shots like the opening of Ep 4 (you know, Princess Leia's ship being chased by the Star Destroyer that just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger until we realize we've never seen anything like this before) will look awesome.
Sorry, Hugh. They won't.
Partly because there's really no way to make that shot more awesome... but mostly because the films weren't filmed in 3D. Which means they're going to use The Process. You remember -- the one that everybody ripped Clash of the Titans and The Last Airbender for using. The one that actually makes the film uglier rather than cooler.
It is yet another attempt to jack money out of our wallets on the Same Old Shit. And, bluntly, I hope it fails. I hope he loses big time. Because it's not innovative or anything. He's trying to create a demand, based on a techie gimmick and on the original product's name recognition, where I don't think there is one, based on the failure of that techie gimmick and on the original product's quality. He's going to spackle bad 3D onto six movies not filmed in 3D, starting with one of the worst, most boring movies in the history of SF films, and following up with two more before he gets to an actual good movie.
Five bucks says he pulls the plug before Ep 4 is released, due to "unexpectedly low demand" on the part of the public, or somesuch. I should have the fiver -- I'm not going to see any of the movies.

Al Williamson Dies
Jun. 15th, 2010 09:23 pmSadness. From multiple sources comes the news that legendary comic artist Al Williamson, best known for (no pun intended) stellar work on Star Wars and Flash Gordon, has passed away at the age of 79.
Coulda Sworn Darth Was Cool Once
Jun. 8th, 2010 09:06 amjenrose notes the final fate of Anakin Skywalker: Reduced to a teaching tool for mental illnesses. And, given the character's history, an inaccurately-diagnosed one at that.
Don't miss the comments -- they're great.
For my own part, I've always had a problem with the prophecy that someone would come to "bring balance to the Force". This, at a time when there are no known Sith lords, the Jedi are firmly entrenched as an arm of the government, and all is well. Do we really want to "bring balance to the force" now, Obi-Wan? 'Cause I think that would mean you all get slaughtered. Oh, right, that's what happened. [facepalm]
Thoughts? Jedi/Sith philosophy? Cookies?

The Bacon AT-AT.
By comparison, the Bacon Lamp doesn't even register on the Coolness Scale.
What cool stuff ya got (especially bacon-related)?
