Dragon*Con Comedy Music Poll

For those of you who have been to Dragon*Con in the past few years, and/or are going this year, I've posted a poll on the [livejournal.com profile] dragoncon LJ community. This is not a thing to be gamed; we're trying to seriously find out, at least a little bit, whether or not the whole dementia-music-track thing has worked since it started with Dr. Demento being there in '04.

Many thanks!

Update: Interesting stats so far (7:15 EST). Out of 45 votes, fully 75% want the same amount of or more comedy music. Only one person said they're not interested in it, and six people who said that's not why they come to the con indicated they could be talked into it. Those votes interest me greatly, along with the three who voted, "Dragon*Con has had comedy music?" There's something going on. Probably too small a sample yet, but there's something going on.

Tom, do you think it would be okay for me to copy and paste what you just said here onto my LJ as well? I would reiterate to my LJ readers that this is just for those folks who have actually attended D*C since 2004.

Yeah, I think it would be first-rate. :) I also just posted a message at D*C's MySpace page. We want to talk to their audience as well as ours.

"Bring in the FuMP, bring in the noise"

Since you're GoH at FenCon this year, we definitely want to feature more funny music.

"Bring in the noise, bring in The FuMP".

Can we use that?

Certainly! I just made it up off the top of my head.

A thank you note somewhere would be cool, but not necessary. :)

Should 'da' be used instead of 'the'?

Demento is a Gateway Drug...

There are a lot of people out there who don't have the slightest idea that the Filk genre even *exists*. These folks never go to Cons, and often do like funny music, and Dr. D has been out there doing that for decades.

I've been undertaking to teaching my Everquest 2 guild about Filk, and when I put a few posts out there, the first response I got was from a guy saying, 'cool I listen to Dr. D, and I like Luke Ski, is that what you mean?'

That gave me a basis to work with, so I refer to Dr. D appearances when I describe an artist. If someone has the intelligence and the humor to like Demento, it's not that far of a stretch to point them to Filk...

So, by all means, continue with your Demento program. It's sometimes the only Filk most people ever hear. I think it has a chance to grow your audience.

Yeah, well, that's why, while I will certainly offer to do filk concerts there and help promote it, what we really want to do is hype Funny Music, Comedy Music. Filk, ya gotta explain. And I've got it down to a fine art, but it does still take a few sentences. If they for some reason can't grasp Funny Music, you say "Weird Al" and you've got 'em.

I wish I were officially qualified, but I don't think I have been to D*C for about a decade, since a cousin of mine moved away and I lost my excuse for going. But anyway, I think it's a great thing you guys are doing there and you should keep doing it.

NightMareWriter's quote above makes me feel old. 'cool I listen to Dr. D, and I like Luke Ski, is that what you mean?' Urm. In my day, it was "I like Weird Al." Or maybe Allen Sherman if I really want to date myself.
