Happy Birthday, Quentin Tarantino

On this date in 1963.

What's your favorite Tarantino movie, or bit from a Tarantino movie? My favorite movie by him would have to be Kill Bill, but I think my favorite individual bits are Cheech Marin's fantastic "Pussy" rant in From Dusk Till Dawn and the moment in Pulp Fiction when Willis and Travolta confront each other.

I would agree with you on those too moments.

I believe it is also captain Tight Pants (Nathan Fillions) birthday.

Happy Tight Pants Day

Oooh, lots of moments to choose from, but there's something about the planning meeting in Reservoir Dogs (the one where everyone gets their color names) that just cracks me up. And the showdown between O-Ren and the Bride in Vol. 1 is just beautiful. And for sheer bombast, who can beat Sam Jackson's "And you will know that my name is the Lord!!" from Pulp Fiction?

My favorite Tarantino film is definitely Jackie Brown - a seriously underrated doublecross/triplecross movie. I saw this the day it came out with my sister and we both agreed it was pretty much the best movie we'd ever seen. Great cast, great characters, great dialogue (natch,) great suspense.

Favorite moment? I dunno. Maybe the scene from Jackie Brown where Jackie comes running out of the store looking confused and the camera starts spinning - not exactly subtle, but it captures the confusion really well.

"What do you think, was it divine intervention?"

"I don't even have an opinion."

"You must think SOMETHI-"

BANG!

I really like the scene in the pawnshop. Bruce Willis is looking for some weapon. Goes for the baseball bat...no, the chainsaw, no the...no the...

YES. THE KATANA. YES.

Also getting high marks are the fight with the Crazy 88s and the Cruel Tutelage of Pai Mei.

I gotta say I don't care for ANY of his stuff. Too bloody, too depressing.

Have at me.

[identity profile] filkertom.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, sorry. Different strokes and all that. And even I'm not a fan of all of his stuff, even as I'm not a fan of everything by Spielberg or Sondheim (not that I'm equating QT with them, just pointing out that not everything is to everyone's taste).

[identity profile] jcw-da-dmg.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Darn. I was hoping for a good knock-down drag-out. NOT!

& I don't care for all of Spielberg or Sondheim either. I think "ET" is WAY over-rated, for one. And I defy ANYONE sit sit through the whole of Pacific Overtures without yawning at least once.

Reservoir Dogs & Pulp Fiction had a few nice moments. But on the whole they made me ill.

Glad to see I'm not the only one... I loathe Tarantino (don't think much of Spielberg either...)

My favorite Tarantino movie is probably Pulp Fiction but my favorite moment (from one of his scripts anyway) is the Christopher Walken/Dennis Hopper scene from True Romance. It was absolutely perfect and the best acting from either actor in their careers.

True Romance was a thing of beauty. My favorite part was Brad Pitt playing a perfect replica of my college roommate.

Or maybe it was the hitman who decides to let the leading lady take her best shot at him with the swiss army awl before he'll kill her. Or Gary Oldman wigging out in the beginning. Or the doofus trying to get his bimbo girlfriend to hide the drugs before the traffic cop sees them.

The sheer number of prefect cameos in that movie was staggering.

And Val Kilmer playing Elvis convincing Christian Slater to kill people!

My favorite Tarantino movie is Pulp Fiction, but my favorite bit is the Cruel Tutelage of Pai Mei from Kill Bill vol. 2.

Can you fear me now?

Michael Madsen shouting "Hel-lo!" into the cop's ear. So sick, I loved it.

One of the greatest monologues in movie history, IMHO;

"There's a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you. I been sayin' that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your ass. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker before you popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin' made me think twice. Now I'm thinkin': it could mean you're the evil man. And I'm the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here, he's the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could be you're the righteous man and I'm the shepherd and it's the world that's evil and selfish. I'd like that. But that shit ain't the truth. The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be a shepherd."

I must confess that my first exposure to his work was Grave Danger; I just hadn't gotten what all the fuss was about up to that point. I caught on quick, though. ;-) I've since seen the final battle from Kill Bill Vol. 1, and will eventually rent both volumes to watch them in sequence.

I have to admit, my favorite bit of his is the corpse-chatting scene in Sin City.

[identity profile] tomreedtoon.livejournal.com 2007-03-28 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
If his co-directed movie Grindhouse has any virtue to it, it may be the first movie of his I've deliberately sought out and liked. I just get the feeling that this film might be the hand grenade that deserves to be thrown into movie theatres. It appears to be full of violence and stupidity, but hell, it's an exploitation movie; it isn't like he's trying to make people care about the people he mutilates.

My absolute favorite scene is Walken's scene in Pulp Fiction: "I
hid with uncomfortable hunk of metal up my ass for two years." hehehe :)
