So It Goes

Sadness. Author Kurt Vonnegut has passed away at the age of 84. Without doubt, he was one of the most influential, controversial, and wildly talented American authors ever, darkly satirical and hopeful even in the dregs of despair. Fare well, good sir, and thanks for sharing your visions with us. They made us better.

I heard about this when I woke up

And I cried all the way into work.

He was the reason I passed English. And the reason I try to be as "So it goes" as possible.
I learned more about the human condition from his works than in all my years of school.
I will miss him

I actually got to see him give his famous talk "How to Get A Job Like Mine" at my college, LSU, when I was there. He appeared to be drunk on stage that night, but I could never be sure; his movements seemed impaired, but his wit and insight were clear and undimmed. A Mark Twain for our time, down to the shock of curly hair: satanically brilliant, sardonic and sarcastic, and undeniably brilliant. He will be missed dreadfully.

Normally, the passing of celebrities is an "Oh, really?" matter for me.
But this one...
There are no words.

I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different. - Kurt Vonnegut

Lets not forget...

He also wrote Thorton Mellon's (Rodney Dangerfield) paper on Kurt Vonnegut in the movie "Back To School" in one of the greatest cameo appearances in movie, EVER.

OMG yes. I was just thinking about that. "I don't know who wrote that paper, but whoever it was doesn't know ANYTHING about Vonnegut."

So it goes. :(

This hit me hard as well.
I posted my own thoughts and a few favorite quotes in my journal where anyone is welcome to jump in with their own memories.

I remember thinking "wow, I found my duprass!" after meeting Ed. :-)

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind!'"

A great loss. :(

I "discovered" Kurt Vonnegut when I was in 9th grade. I saw "Breakfast of Champions" in the school library (my favorite lunchtime hangout) and thought it sounded interesting, so I checked it out and brought it up to my math class next period. The teacher saw it sitting on my desk and informed me that I wasn't supposed to bring books like that to school.

Naturally, I couldn't wait to read it...
