Airplay

Christine Lavin's show Slipped Disks (on Sirius/xm Channel 15, "The Village") will have a new episode Tuesday, Nov. 18, at noon EST. (It's rerun Friday night at midnight.) She plays "Tech Support For Dad" near the end of the first half-hour.

I'm on da radio. :)

I've been thinking of getting a satellite radio anyway. Those of you who have 'em, what are your favorite channels and shows? And, otherwise, what are your favorite radio shows? Mine would be A Prairie Home Companion, The Thistle & Shamrock, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, and Car Talk. (And if you'd told me five years ago that last one would even be on the list, I'd've said you were crazy. Click & Clack are an acquired taste, and it took me awhile to acquire it.)

ETA: D'oh! And Thom Hartmann and Randi Rhodes. Ed Schultz, not so much.

I like all the NPR shows you list, but there's no question, Wait, Wait has shot to the top of the list these days.

I don't listen to the radio all that often, since I keep the car changer stocked with CDs. My other favorite is Disc Drive, 3-6 PM weekdays on CBC. (In the Detroit area, that's 89.9 FM.) Jurgen Goth, the DJ, has nicely eclectic taste, running from classical to jazz to singer-songwriters.

I love having access to CBC2. I mean, you can stream it anywhere over the net, but we can get it in the car. Hee hee.

Tom, I like the ones you list too, although I am not sure I have heard the 2nd one. Car Talk makes me laugh myself silly.

[identity profile] filkertom.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a wonderful Celtic-predominantly-Irish show (http://thistleradio.com/), hosted by a woman named Fiona Ritchie who has an amazing accent.

I'm happy Thistle and Shamrock is still on the air. I haven't heard it since coming out west. (Ditto Dr. Demento, for that matter, but that one's online and there's the FUMP so I don't feel all that deprived.)

[identity profile] pabsungenis.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You've been on the radio before. (blushes demurely)

I like my Sirius, but I mainly use it for talk and news nowadays. For music, I have an iPod.

[identity profile] filkertom.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely, O Radio Guy. :) But it's been awhile, and, unless Dr. Demento is on Sirius/xm, I don't know that I've ever been on a satellite station before. (Love to be proven wrong....)

When Dr. Demento was on XM, you had three plays:
drd05x.0122:Talk Like A Pirate Day - Tom Smith
drd05x.0101:Talk Like A Pirate Day - Tom Smith
drd04x.0717:Five Years - Tom Smith

All his XM shows were repeats of radio shows.

Well, you and I share Wait, Wait: Don't Tell Me but I simply MUST add This American Life. I was most impressed by the episode "Superheroes" they did a few years ago...

[identity profile] filkertom.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, This American Life is pretty cool. So is On The Media. I don't often listen, but they are always good when I do tune in.

Congratulations for making it to the big time!

Any idea if we can download the show post airing of Slipped Disks?

[identity profile] filkertom.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No place obvious, Harold. Although I'm sure there has to be some radio-show bittorrent site out there....

[personal profile] hms42 2008-11-13 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Hopefully they will provide you a copy of the show. (and a link to where people can find it online.)

Either way, congratulations!

Also, Dr. Demento did make it onto one of the Satellite radio stations for a while.

Pretty much anything on NPR. On our local Air America/Jones Network affiliate, I enjoy Thom Hartmann, Rachel Maddow, Ron Reagan, and Randi Rhodes.

Yow! Forgot AAR. I should get up in the morning for Rachel -- I adore her.

I have Sirius in my car ... and I love it. I listen to Little Stevens Underground Garage (25) when I need a boost, it's mostly basic rock and roll. I swap around the two NPR stations (135 & 134) a fair amount. I have to agree with your choices above. I know that WW is on at 4 on sunday (my usual drive home day) and arrange stops around it. If I am not traveling I DL the podcast. On an aside, if you are interested, the News Quiz an excellent podcast, kind of like WW, except British ... VERY British. bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy/

I listen to the left wing channel (146), except in the afternoon, I despise Lynn Samuels.

I also listen to the gay talk station (109), cause I have a serious lack of flaming queens in my circle of friends at the moment. And the afternoon host, Michelangelo Signorile has one of the best political programs on the air as far as I am concerned.

I did tune into the Fox channel last Wednesday, just to hear them all swallowing their own heads ...

[identity profile] filkertom.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I'm good with British quizzes. I used to listen to My Word all the time. The follow-up show, My Music, sadly wasn't so good.

[personal profile] ericcoleman 2008-11-12 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and it's MC'ed by Sandi Toksvig ... from both the UK and the US version of Whose Line ...

And I loved My Word ...

[identity profile] liddle-oldman.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
As well as Wait Wait (which we listen to by podcast every Monday), we always catch Says You.

[identity profile] geenerswh.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the ones you mentioned (ok, minus "Thistle," but I just can't listen to *that* much celtic music at one time). Plus, I am absolutely addicted to "This American Life," and highly enjoy "What Do You Know?"

Well, the Sirius/XM merger just took effect on the channel lists, so I can't really tell you anymore what channels I like and don't. As much as they claim that we shouldn't notice major lineup changes, just listening to XM 150: Uncensored Comedy, I can already tell you that there IS a difference. Oh, they still play uncensored comedy, but the feel of the channel is just different.

Ali and I went with XM rather than Sirius for a reason. Too bad for us, I guess.

[identity profile] bryanp.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I like all of the NPR shows you list, though some I listen to more regularly than others. I've been listening to Click & Clack since 1990 or so.

If your local NPR affiliate carries it I highly recommend Says You (http://www.saysyou.net/) I strongly suspect you'll enjoy it.

For whatever reason my local NPR station carries two versions of Says You. They play an abridged 30 minute version on Saturdays and the full one hour show at Sunday.

[identity profile] jcw-da-dmg.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, my favorite is extremely local and extremely infrequent. A friend of mine named David Bragman does it every fourth Sunday of the month for one hour on WLUW, a college station at Loyola University in Chicago. It's called Old Folkies At Home, and sometimes he plays my/my band's stuff on there.

About the only radio show I listen to regularly is local folk show Traditions on American University's station WAMU. And usually only half of that--it runs 11pm to 1am on Saturday nights, and I pass out around midnight when I'm just lazing at home (as opposed to out filking or otherwise having fun).

Occasionally I catch bits of Little Steven's Underground if I'm coming home from a con at the right time on Sunday night.

[identity profile] alverant.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I like Sound Opinions on Saturdays. I'm not a loyal listener but it's on when I'm driving. It's good to hear about the different genres of music. I wonder if they ever did a filk show.

[identity profile] valarltd.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I run my Sirius most of the day.

The Roadhouse (62, classic country) starts my day.

At 9:30 it's over to Radio Classics (118) for Gunsmoke.

Then at 10, it's Freewheelin' on 147, the Road Dog. Trucker talk on any number of subjects.

At 1, I tune in the first hour of Michaelangelo Signorile on OutQ (109) Terrific political program. And he gets some interesting guest authors.

At 2, I switch to Outlaw Country (63) for the Rigrocker and Hammer Down Radio, an hour of trucking music.

At 3, I go back to Michaelangelo

If I'm still out at 5, I usually switch between Blue Collar Comedy (103), Big 80's (8) and The Roadhouse.

I don't listen to the radio much because I am so much of a geek that I usually just play music using my (GNU/Linux powered) laptop in the car. I have a car charger and a remote I can use one handed without looking, so it works better than you might expect. When I do listen to the radio, though, it's NPR all the way. There is usually something good on, and often something great.

[identity profile] pjhandley.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
OH, I adore Click & Clack.....listening to them reminds me of my late father (who was also a "car guy"). We've actually been listening to them for years, so it was to our great amusement that when the older kids saw "Cars" for the first time, they recognized the voices (of Lightning's sponsors).......

[identity profile] saganth.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't listen to the radio much on weekend sadly as I get horrible reception inside the house, better in the car when I go places. But I love PHC, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, Thistle and Shamrock (I am in love and lust with Fiona Ritchie's voice!!), along with Echoes (John DiLobretto has such a soothing voice), Hearts of Space - all of these of course are on NPR. Also, a local classical music station here in upstate NY has every weekday morning at 7:45 what they call the "Sousalarm" - John Phillip Sousa marching band music to help wake you up.

There is also, sadly only back on Long Island (tho you can get it streaming at http://www.captphilonline.com), on WUSB 90.1 FM, a great sci fi show called "Destinies: The Voice of Science Fiction." It's a sf/fantasy/comics/fandom-themed program that features recordings of performances at I-Con (until the host got blackballed by the con committee most unfairly!!), music scores, interviews with authors and actors, excerpts from audiobooks, radio plays and other interesting things. It's a great show (even though I didn't listen very often myself as it airs 11:30 PM on Fridays when I am frequently too tired to remember to tune in, and when I did remember too frequently it would be an interview with some author I never heard of or a radio play that wasn't all that good), I was on it a number of times myself with my filk music, and Tom was a guest at least once!!

You need to check out Stephanie Miller. She is syndicated on Jones Radio Network and is amazing. She is a proud liberal but her show is built around "fart jokes". She has been showing up a lot lately on Larry King and other TV talk shows. She is also the daughter of Bill Miller, Barry Goldwater's running mate in 1964 (as she says, she was "born to wolves and raised by Republicans").

Her site is www.stephaniemiller.com
Check her out and give Momma (Steph's nickname) some love. :)
