I'm really glad to see President Obama come out in support of marriage equality.
I feel that the only justification for the government getting involved in people's private lives is when it has a compelling reason of cultural management. The government needs to know which people have decided to move through life as a social unit, for such purposes as sharing a residence, raising children, paying taxes, caring for each other in times of sickness, etc. If there's any justification to know this for anyone, then it must apply to everyone or else the government is dropping the ball on really important stuff.
