Anonymous may have it's collective heart in the right place, but I have a beef against at least some of them for coordinating a personal harassment campaign against me and my fellow songwriter Allison Lonsdale following the release of this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKVI2_Dl00Y).
Some time after the release of this video, our personal information was obtained by persons unknown and posted on several Anonymous-linked websites. We were then subjected to harassing and threatening phone calls, mostly between the hours of midnight and 3am.
Fortunately, Anonymous seems to have a short attention span, as the calls stopped a few days later. But threats continued to pile up on the YouTube channel, until we had to move the video to its own channel with commenting disabled.
I may be part of the 99%, but I will NEVER be Anonymous.
First, sorry for the b.s. on that. Completely undeserved, and the threatening phone calls are of course illegal.
'Sfunny. I don't know that I entirely agree with Anonymous's nebulous agenda. They are, in a way, internet trolls taken to a new level -- shit-stirrers with some actual power, hackers with an agenda. They do seem to be on the side of The Little Guy, which unfortunately doesn't necessarily mean they're on the side of any particular guy (as you found out).
All that said, the primary reason I posted this was that it struck me as very comic-bookish... in a good way. I think. It really brought out the vibe of V's Speech To Britain in the graphic novel, and of various heroes and villains in various media. We don't often get something like this in meatspace. But I suspect we're going to see more of it.
I've seen that this "group" appears to be good for is showing the lies that is the destructive cult of the dreaded *S* word. Otherwise, as the eben has put it, I may be part of the 99%, but I will NEVER be Anonymous.
My take on that: Okay, fine, they took on Scientology, but only because it interested them. "May Anonymous take an interest in you" may well become the "ancient Chinese curse" of our time.
'Salright. If people didn't make that mistake every now & then, I'd have no use for the poem.
For my concert, and I think maybe some of my panels, at Noreascon 4, I bought the biggest lemon I could find in downtown Boston - it was gigantic - and held that up next to one of my plush lemmings, so that people could know the difference.
Remember, remember the fifth of November (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UVGLHU/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=tomsmithonlin-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B000UVGLHU)....
Even better :) And yes, I've seen V for Vendetta. Was thinking this week that Occupy Everywhere is sort of a giant, collective Howard Beale moment. "We're mad as hell and we're NOT going to take it anymore!!"

Date: 2011-10-07 04:01 pm (UTC)As for the calls being illegal, yeah, well, that doesn't help when the callers use a telephone anonymizing service.

(a parody of The Plover and the Clover by Robert Williams Wood)
by Blind Lemming Chiffon
The lemon and the lemming -
The two are oft confused,
And, mind, I'm not condemning
The fact that you're amused...
The lemming, like the lemon,
May fall out of a tree,
BUT HE TASTES JUST LIKE A GREMLIN
WHEN YOU SQUEEZE HIM IN YOUR TEA!
