And he did it without screaming "slut" at one woman, or shooting one doctor, or blowing up one clinic. Take THAT, Operation Oppress-You!

That is so far beyond amazing that I don't know what word to use. That is . . . . 2.2 million babies. Bloody Brilliant. step by step, drop by drop. I am awed.

That is cool. I hadn't realized that there was such an antibody. Conventionally. a newborn with the disease is given a total transfusion--i.e., all of its blood is replaced with rH- blood containing no antibodies. Of course, this only works if the problem is discovered early enough.

The product that he helps to produce with his donations has been around since the mid-60's, which is why "blue baby syndrome" is becoming a thing of the past. There are many kids these days that have not even heard of it, whereas when I was growing up it was a known problem. Prevention is much, much easier than treatment.

While the anti-D they are talking about is not as rare as they indicate, he is a hero for actually inducing the antibody to be able to donate for this worthy cause. There is actually a small risk to his future health in doing so, as if he ever needs massive amounts of blood the blood that he could get has now been significantly restricted due to the antibody. Hopefully he will never have the need...

"Mr Harrison has been giving blood every few weeks since he was 18 years old and has now racked up a total of 984 donations."

Absolutely YES. That man is a REAL hero.

That's incredible and beautiful and wonderful... Both that he was given the ability to save so many lives and that he is so willing to give himself to do so. Bravo, sir. And thank you for sharing the news.

What a wonderful human being. He could, so he has. Simple as that, for him.

But I'm not clear on something. Yes, his plasma can treat the condition - but he will not live forever. Do they now have a way to synthesize the antibody without Mr. Harrison?

That is amazing! Though I wonder how it differs from Rhogam, which I was given while expecting because I'm Rh negative and [livejournal.com profile] sdavido is positive, and they didn't want my body attacking the baby.
