Hell of a day, actually:
  • the first season of the acclaimed (at least by a bunch of my friends) Pushing Daisies
  • the second season of Torchwood
  • new collections of Avatar and Dragonball Z
  • a collection of the first two seasons of Duckman(!)
  • the first live-action Death Note movie
  • 20th anniversary edition of Beetlejuice
  • Star Trek: Alternate Realities (a collection of episodes which -- well, "Your agonizer, please")
  • two-disk special editions of An American In Paris and Gigi
  • Puccini's La Boheme from the Metropolitan Opera's Live HD series
  • the third season of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour
  • Speed Racer, which I hope is at least watchable for the sake of John Goodman and hot damn Christina Ricci
  • The Love Guru and some drivel by noted CNN bigoted asshat Glenn Beck, if you're planning that MST3K party
Any other releases today we should know about?

You should love Pushing Daisies. It's one of the few shows that proves there is real talent on prime time TV.

Pushing Daisies is at the top of my must-buy list, for sure. And I did enjoy Speed Racer. And thanks for the tip on An American in Paris - I wasn't aware of that one.

It's also a great week for my favorite comics. Releases this Wednesday include Echo (Terry Moore's new book), All Star Superman, Brave and the Bold (Marv Wolfman and Phil Winslade), The Spirit, and Linda Medley's brilliant fantasy, Castle Waiting.

You could see if the soundtrack for The Love Guru syncs up with that Beck video

Speaking of Alternate Realities, a friend of mine and I have the theory that there's a 'tell' in every Star Trek series when there's alternate dimension dickery going on.

At the moment, I can only recall one; for Voyager.
It's Harry Kim. Harry Kim dies = Alternate reality/dream. The alternative is that Harry's the only survivor of a giant calamity.
I'm sure there's more...

Speed Racer will be fun to watch on a moderate- to big-screen TV.

John Candy has the best line of the film. I'll not spoil it.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I did find a "playlist" for that Star Trek: Alternate Realities box set. I do not consider all of these to qualify actually; a couple are mind-swap or evil-twin stories, not alternate realities. OH well, I guess they needed to fill up disc space.

1 - Star Trek: The Alternative Factor
2 - Star Trek: Mirror, Mirror
3 - Star Trek: The Enemy Within
4 - Star Trek: Turnabout Intruder
5 - Star Trek: The Next Generation: Yesterday's Enterprise
6 - Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Inner Light
7 - Star Trek: The Next Generation: Frame of Mind
8 - Star Trek: The Next Generation: Parallels
9 - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 43: Crossover
10 - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 66: Through The Looking Glass
11 - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 76: The Visitor
12 - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 92: Shattered Mirror
13 - Star Trek: Voyager: Before & After
14 - Star Trek: Voyager: Timeless
15 - Star Trek: Voyager: Course: Oblivion
16 - Star Trek: Voyager: Shattered
17 - Star Trek: Enterprise: Twilight
18 - Star Trek: Enterprise: E²
19 - Star Trek: Enterprise: In a Mirror, Darkly, Part 1
20 - Star Trek: Enterprise: In a Mirror, Darkly, Part 2

I'm psyched about the Death Note movie; a friend pre-ordered me a copy as part of a swap. I've seen a fansub and I'm looking forward to having a legitimate copy, and I'm curious about the dub.

Now to wait for the second live action movie (which I also enjoyed a great deal!)

serious speed racer geek here.

my husband has no choice. we're getting it. He got to pull the warp signature move (i.e. grabbing the box off the shelf and beating feet to the register so fast that all you see are warp signatures...) with The Transformers movies.

I get to get my speed racer fix.

I loved the movie.

Must resist buying Beetlejuice. Already. Have. Copy.

Thanks for always keeping me updated on when movies are released! I always find out before we go to the store now, so I have time to come up with a good story about why we should buy .

Speed Racer is a lot better than the reviewers say it is. most of the reviewers didn't know what they were watching.

It's a live-action cartoon, not a live-action interpretation of a cartoon, but a live-action cartoon in and of itself. For those of us who watched and loved the original anime, it had all the feel of such and was therefore awesome.

However, those who were expecting realism were disappointed. But this film is not about realism, it's about Speed Racer! ;)

Take that review from me as you will. :)

If you are a fan of the original Speed Racer TV series, you will be happy with the movie. There have been updates but I think it works well. John Goodman is NOT wasted in this moive at all, he fit the part perfectly. The movie was worth the full theater price and popcorn/soda there.

Gotta argue with this, WildCard. I saw the movie. It was instant camp. It's got to get its own Rifftrax commentary soon. And why did Susan Sarandon blow her lengthy career of carefully chosen roles and dedication to the best in acting to play...Moms Racer? Did she need lunch money or something? Or a spare quart of Lorenzo's Oil?

Alan burned the Borders'40%-off-DVD-boxed-set coupon on that today.
