Still not blinking....

Remember to specify in the subject line what ep you're talking about. The newest ep, downloadable if you've got the right sources, is 5x05, "Flesh and Stone"; the one that aired last night on BBC America is 5x03, "Victory of the Daleks".

I thought it was a great, action-packed episode that seemed to hearken back to old-school stories somehow (although I can't quite put my finger on anything that was specifically "old-Who").

Having Amy so blatantly try to seduce the Doctor at the end threw me a bit, but I think the way the Doctor responded made it work.

This episode also made some nice advances to both the "time crack" arc and the "River Song" arc (assuming, of course, that they're not the same thing).

Bottom line: I quite liked it. :)

I liked the episode but...well...I think someone else said it best about the color of the Daleks:

I've been a Doctor Who fan for around 30 years, and this ep had me more enthralled than I've been by Who since I was a kid. here's my semicoherent squee post. Matt Smith has completely won me over. My innate distaste at the idea of Doctor/companion shipping has dissolved under the pressure of Eleven/Amy. I'm falling for the show again, and even venturing into the actual fandom.

But the most awesome part? My bestie [livejournal.com profile] rehd_fawx started watching with The Eleventh Hour, as a total Who virgin. She is in love. When she visits me in a few months we are gonna marathon some classic Who. There are fishsticks in the freezer and custard powder in the pantry; if I am lucky one of the imports stores will have jelly babies and/or Jammie Dodgers.

Also, I'm shopping around for angel statues :)

Best practical use of a crack in the space/time continuum.

After that episode, I'm fairly convinced that "River Song" is actually the Rani.

Yeek. With all the flooding down here (Nashville) and making sure people are okay I forgot about the new Who. Downloading now. Yay.

Pretty much my take. I could do with the "everyone falls for the Doctor" stuff but it was handled fairly well. And Doctor/River continues to be awesome.

I'd be lots happier with s5e04 and s05e05 if the Weeping Angels were what they were initially introduced as. Instead of beings who can't move when seen and who can't or won't communicate, we have Angel Bob and the Stone Stalkers.

And, truthfully, we did the pulled-through-crack-in-the-universe thing already, which led to Rose and 10A being sealed away, together, but not accessible. (And didn't that quarry look like Bad Wolf Bay after the Angels were sucked away?)

Why wasn't it possible to break the Angel's arm and free Octavius? Or any Angel, caught in stone form?

Plus, little sisters don't fall for their big Doctor brothers. Amy Pond's been a little sister (which worked fine after Rose the Requited Love Interest, Martha the Unrequited Love Interest, and Donna the Big Sister/Buddy); I suspect strongly that we're looking at Amy's aberrant behavior as a symptom of whatever larger arc we're supposed to be seeing with the Crack O'Doom.

Beginning to wish they'd cast David Thewlis or Gary Oldman (if either would have accepted) as the Doctor. I don't get the gravitas the Doctor needs from Mr. Smith. (Despite that he clearly WANTS to do well, he may need another five years of acting experience before he can get it right. Too bad.)

Episode 5x03: Victory of the Daleks

We'll start out with a blasphemous thought...I'm tired of the Daleks. They're actually rather repetitive. It would be nice to see Doctor Who take a break from them for a while, although I don't suppose there's any way that is going to happen.

Although I've loved Ian McNeice for years, his Churchill just never rang true for me. He played Churchill on stage in 2008 in the play Never So Good and I wonder how his portrayal differed between the two roles.

I kept waiting for someone to suggest to Amy Pond that she might want to put on an appropriate length skirt. The one she was wearing was just a little too anachronistic to be accepted in that period.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I wish that whoever does the sound mixing on Doctor Who would get a clue. I've noticed in all three episodes I've seen that there is a tendency to let the music swell to a volume such that it drowns out whatever the characters are saying, especially when there is a dramatic moment and the characters are speaking softly.

That was my first thought when they made their appearance.

That's an interesting premise I hadn't considered. Thanks!

Though that would mean The Doctor and the Rani were/are/will be married at some point. Not sure how that goes over really...

Saw it on the flight home from PenguiCon. Crappy laptop sound means I have to rewatch the last five minutes of it. VERY interesting what they are doing with River Song. I can't wait to see her again, and apparently it will happen this season (part of the current uber-plot).

Don't forget having "your beans on toast" <- 9th Doctor to Rose. I sure he is taking about baked beans. Or street vendor/shop 'chips', which Rose sprung for later.

Thanks... I was wondering if I was the only one who thought "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" when they appeared. I have to send this video to a friend...
