Sean Connery is 80 today.

What's your favorite Connery movie, or Connery role? My favorite Bond movie with him is Goldfinger, but I also love Darby O'Gill and the Little People, and of course Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade simply wouldn't be the same without Dr. Henry Jones Senior. His brief turn as King Agamemnon in Time Bandits was excellent, and, even though I don't think it's a particularly good movie, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves knew what the hell they were doing by having him show up as King Richard the Lion-Hearted in the last two minutes -- the crowd pop was amazing.

And then there's Zardoz.

I will let others wax rhapsodic about the amazing Robin and Marian. Oops, too late.

What, no "Zardoz"?!

Have to second "Goldfinger", but "Highlander" ranks right up there for me as well.

Highlander, oh yes...not that his Spanish accent was amazing or anything, but... :-)

Crusade would have to be my overall favorite, but I have a soft spot for Dragonheart...he was a natural as a dragon, all right.

Actually, yeah. Dragonheart is a rather better film than it gets credit for.

And there are whole comedy routines about Sean's Spanish accent....

"I'm not Spanish, I'm Egyptian!" ;-)

Of course, his "Russian" accent in Hunt for Red October wasn't any better, but honestly, those two probably rank as my favorites. I love Crusade, but Highlander and Red October are honestly two of my favorite movies, mostly because of Connery.

Daniel Dravot in _The Man who Would be King_. Connery's greatest performance.

I liked him in _The Name of the Rose_, and while I haven't seen it, I heard he was good in a comedy called _A Fine Madness_.

Holy crap, how did I forget Untouchables?

"You wanna know how you do it? Here's how, they pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way, and that's how you get Capone!"

Goldfinger, for the sheer Bondness of it all.

The Untouchables, for casting against type and for the sheer nerve of what they do to his character.

Of his early films I would single out "Marnie" and "the Hill" particularly the latter where he plays an ambiguous military prisoner. Of his later work I like "the Name of the Rose" "The Untouchables" and "The Rock."

Ditto here on Red October. Eddie Izzard had a great bit on Connery's "Russian Accent", but who cares? The man is 80, and he's *still* great eye candy!

Last Crusade, Hunt for Red October, Highlander, Finding Forrester. I'm not a huge fan of his Bond movies, but mostly because of their style of the era and not because of him. If I had to pick from his Bond films I'd say Goldfinger.

Not sure I'm a fan big-time of the man himself. I've heard some very ugly rumors over the years about him being sexist and racist...? Supposedly he's been attributed to saying that smacking around women is actually acceptable??!!

Oh yes, I love *him* in that movie... although the plot itself (the ending mostly) makes me cringe these days, especially since I found out that the historical facts where rather... mangled by Hollywood. ^^

And Highlander. Boy, Highlander so much... *swoons*

My favorite Bond movie is From Russia With Love. It's a nearly perfect spy movie.

I once went on a date with a lovely woman from Chicago. We went to see Robin & Marian. I had seen it before, she had not. We walked out and she said "that was the stupidest thing I have ever seen". We didn't go out again.

Stupid, no. Sad, yes. I know it was true to the Robin Hood legend, but it did break my heart a little. Not my favorite retelling of the story, but yeah, Connery turned in a good performance.

Suddenly I'm wondering how he would have done as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Not dissing the great Sir Alec Guiness at all, but Connery would have been an interesting older Jedi knight.

Heh. Maybe there needs to be a filk song in tribute to all of the older leading men (and women) who still have it in their later years...Sean Connery, Patrict Stewart, Sophia Loren, Barbara Eden, Raquel Welch, Harrison Ford (okay, it's a weird list, but I'm a weird person).

I love Zardoz - it's just so much a movie of its time period. When you think of 70s sci-fi (pre Star Wars), this is one I think of (Logan's Run being another) :)

Last time I went to the Gilmore Car Museum in Augusta, MI, they had one of the sets from Darby O'Gill and the Little People. They let people go in and get a photo of them sitting in the over-sized car seats. I haven't seen the movie in a long time and forgot that Connery was in it.
Sean Connery in First Knight was good: I also liked his acting in the Indiana Jones movies.

Definitely Highlander.

And even though the rest of the film just about makes Zardoz look like Oscar-quality filmmaking, Connery's scenes in Highlander II also rock. Especially when he first appears in the middle of a production of Hamlet.

Well, for the guys there is Christine Lavin's "Bald-Headed Men". In which she mentions both Connery and Stewart. (Also the late Telly Savalas.)

I've only performed it a couple of times, but I was inspired to write a filk of UT's "Teenybopper Love" by the fact that my father is one day younger than Raquel Welch.

I saw Robin and Marion when I was in college in the 70's at the really, really cheap movie house--I think it cost me 50 cents plus bus fare. I was the only one in the theater who laughed at the the jokes.

I regard that as his best role, by a long shot. The man has talent. A Russian submarine captain with a Scottish accent? Totally believable with Connery taking the role.
