it was SOOOO long ago since I saw the original, this is like a whole new movie to me. Looks great, and the updates in the 25 years since the first one means ALL-NEW things can be done!

I thought this was just an evil rumor designed to get my hopes up. YAY that it's for real. I know Tron was a cheesy bit of special effects and halfway bad acting. But it was an AWESOME cheesy bit of special effects and halfway bad acting.

If you haven't seen Tron in a long time, or haven't seen it at all, I can recommend this:

Great clip BTW. I love how updated it looks.

Ooooooooh. I was a huge Tron fan as a kid. The only thing that bothers me, and this is totally silly, is that I kind of miss the impossible 90 degree turns the light-cycles made... However, the fact that the crack in the wall left by Flynn's escape is STILL THERE however many years later made the continuity fangirl squee.

... Also, Jeff Bridges is so much easier to recognize with hair. As Obediah Stane, it took me something like twenty minutes to figure out who he was.

Vax just made gleeful whimpering noises, and has spent the last 20 minutes saying "dude".

This made his inner 14 year old even happier than big screen Transformers.

Well, yes and no. Potential spoiler below the dashed line.

From what I've read, that's not Flynn, but Clu, the program Flynn wrote. Clu snuck into Encon with a stolen password and was derezzed by the MCP in the first film. Now he's been re-rezzed...but to what purpose?

Mmf. Nice special effects, but lightcycles that can move up as well as sidewise and apparently can be turned off/stopped whenever aren't nearly as exciting as the original constrained grid ones with enforced sharp turns. Especially when hitting the light apparently isn't particularly dangerous, necessitating gratuitous 'manual' killing afterwards (if I'm reading that trailer right.)
Or maybe I'm just an old grouch, and should limit myself to tracking down the original for a last nostalgia-fest before trying to reformat my brain enough to give the new version a fair viewing.

To me it's the difference between an 80's 8-bit game, and a modern 3d-rendered 'simulation' game. Like the difference between 'Wumpus Hunt' and 'World of Warcraft'

Agree with this -- I spent more hours with Adventure and Wumpus than WoW (got bored with the latter in about three days), but I suppose if you start out with the latter the 8-bit games must seem rather dull.

Well, a fair bit of time has passed in the computer world. It's possible that playing light cycles has gotten far less lethal. Remember that originally, programs were sent down to the Game Grid for execution.

And no, I don't think the "gratuitous 'manual' killing" was at all necessary. The defeated program protested, "You won, okay? This is just a game!" His opponent replied, "Not any more." That kinda suggests that death isn't a routine part of the games.

Also:

Seems to me that having a vehicle at full throttle shattered, and your body catapulted forward, would qualify as dangerous.

Badly phrased on my part -- I was thinking meta-necessary, whoever made that movie adding a rather more personal type of kill than the more remote video-death of the original movie. Maybe because they are aiming for a more adult audience?

It's my understanding that this is the same footage they showed LAST year, it was just in exhibited 3-D this time around. I heard the real teaser trailer is supposed to hit late August.

Same footage, yes. But now officially released for public consumption. Most of us only got to see the bootlegged footage from last year, with just enough discernable detail to go "oooh, light cycle!"

Me: Honey, check this out. It's a teaser trailer for the new Tron

(Clarification. Honey is Andrea, she is 27, I am 38. She grew up watching Tron but on cable or the occasional VHS, not the movie experience which I got back in Denver in the early 80s)

Andi: I dunno. Okay.

*watches the trailer*

Andi: You know, I think I just got nerd wood.
Me: Uh-huh. Me too. We will be seeing this in IMAX. Oh yes.
