What is sure is that he was a pianoforte virtuoso, smashing those flimsy keyboards to splinters with his emotionally and physically ferocious improvisations (and leading to the sturdier pianos we know today), that he famously went deaf and then wrote some of his greatest works, and that he was one of the most creative and influential composers in history, forever redefining the boundaries of the sonata and the symphony.
