God, People Suck (But Not You)
Dec. 5th, 2011 03:24 pmI did something really stupid today: I read the comments to stories at Yahoo News.
If you're ever looking for fuel to become a bitter, horrible misanthrope, that's the place.
Small example: A Detroit woman -- 36 years old, disabled, mother of six -- sold her house. Well, traded it, basically, for a decent-shape minivan so she could drive her kids to school. (The Detroit bus system being what it is.) They aren't homeless -- they got another house nearby on a land contract.
Some of the commenters berated her for having so many kids. Some said she should've taken one of the better vehicle offers she got, e.g., a Corvette, sold that and kept the profit. Some said she should home-school the kids.
Not very many said Hey She Did A Good Thing. Too many damn qualifiers, many of which were straight-up negative. (About the Corvette, she'd said, "I can't do anything practical with a Corvette." Which means, to me, that the profit motive wasn't involved in this whole thing. She hadn't thought past getting her kids to school. Sounds like a devoted mother to me.)
Some people said something was fishy.
Multiply that by about fifteen stories, many of which were political, and you start to wonder whether you should just crawl back into the hole.
Fortunately, you all are much, much smarter and wiser than I. And very generous as well. I'm out the door to pay the rent. Thanks.
After I get back, I start uploading the next concert. And warming my toesies -- it's cold out there.
How's your day going?
