Bob Hoskins Is Retiring
Aug. 11th, 2012 07:06 pmSadness, but understandable. Character actor Bob Hoskins is retiring from acting after having been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.
Hoskins is a special performer, for me right up there with Ernest Borgnine, Burgess Meredith, and Harry Morgan -- not necessarily a top-tier player as far as the box office goes, but absolute magic onscreen. Like most Americans, I didn't see his breakout performance in The Long Good Friday when it was released. But, oh man, do we remember watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit? And Hook. And Neverland, giving an entirely new dimension on the same character twenty years later.
Heck, I even went to see Super Mario Bros.
He played Churchill, Khrushchev, Mussolini, and J. Edgar Hoover; Geppetto, Fezziwig, Sancho Panza, and Prof. Challenger. He did it all with style. We thank him for his work, and wish him the best for his retirement, and now I think I have to go watch Hook again.
