I have a dream. And the need to work for it is as vital and vibrant as ever.

May the day come when differences between us are only celebrated, and the value of every person is appreciated.

And we have here (http://nightlight.typepad.com/nightlight/2011/01/todays-visionary-not-yesterdays-celebrity-martin-luther-king-jrs-words-with-contemporary-images.html) an article on MLK and current inequities of wealth.

MLK's speech in Memphis: http://delong.typepad.com/sdj/2011/01/martin-luther-king-jr-april-3-1968.html

MLK on poverty and war: http://crooksandliars.com/susie-madrak/dr-martin-luther-king-jr-saw-war-enem

It's also the 50th anniversary of the Eisenhower speech which popularized the phrase "military-industrial complex." http://horsesass.org/?p=32212

And, in some really bad news for a lot of black people, "Baby Doc" Duvalier has returned to Haiti: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-12208109

My students are always surprised when I teach different speeches or writings of King's other than his most famed "I Have a Dream" speech.

And I always use his speeches to teach how a persuasive speech ought to be done.

Dammit, Tom. I had about half of a big draft done, and you go and say all that needs saying in one line.

Keep on keepin' on, kind sir, you are among the best of us.

I'm still trying to convince the non-profit I work for that we, more than most, should be celebrating MLK day. They just don't connect the civil rights issues of then with the civil rights issues of now.

My job starts tomorrow and I spent part of the day at the food pantry helping out again. The big stack of boxes of canned goods was missing, used up over the weekend. Fortunately we didn't have as many people as usual. But for the first time I saw a client trying to steal more than their fair share. Up until then people only took what they were allocated, if that. Some people refused items they weren't going to use and the fact they were honest and left something for others makes you feel good about people. But this guy, he said he didn't eat meat so he should be given more of other things. Personally I was shocked. At least 4 times I saw him "accidentally" take an extra item. He was caught but I suspect more than one extra item found its way into his cart. I can understand if he had a large family but this seemed to go deeper, like he felt entitled or it was a compulsion (or cultural).

I wanted to help people this day now one of them turns out to be a minor thief.

My single favorite MLK quote is "Nothing is more dangerous than heartfelt stupidity and sincere ignorance." (Maybe I'll take the Latin version of that thought, sincerus bardus quod utpote ignarus, fashion a heraldic blazon for the next Tea Party rally, and mingle.)
