Something else I'm checking into: How many of you are on Second Life? I'm there as FilkerTom Smythe. (I log on about once a year, at least in the past, so don't go looking for me just this second.)

Have an account but never there. It was so frustrating; I couldn't figure out how to adjust the features so that I was happy (can do it just fine with Sims or Aion but SL eluded me), I wasn't sure how to get to anywhere interesting, and the weird flight mechanics bothered me (but then I adjust slowly to any new kind of virtual flight - this was just the icing on the failcake). I doubt I'd go back unless one of my friends were to do some serious coaching, or point me toward enough resources that I could learn the first two of those things on my own.

Oh, and it was laggy when more graphically sophisticated MMO's were not on my machine. I still wonder why.

I technically have a presence there as Channing Writer but my lack of home hi-speed internet makes anything other than the occasional lunchtime drop-in a no-fly, so I'm not on too often.

I'm there. If you're having a concert inworld, I'm so there. If you want, I can also see about spreading the word to other geeky types I know, or even just folks who enjoy hearing live music.

I'm not there, but I'd been thinking about starting up with that...

There's no monthly fee, is there?

Depends. You can be inworld absolutely free. But then you won't be able to buy clothes or have a place to stay and such. Buying the money (called lindens) with a credit card or paypal lets you buy clothes, furniture, raver stuff... and tip the musicians/djs for their work. Get a premium account for about 10$ a month and you are permitted to buy land, although most people skip the premium cost and simply rent land from someone else instead -- cheaper that way. It is also possible to make money inworld without spending a realLife dime, either dancing in clubs or DJing or building things that others want to buy like clothes and shoes and homes. But unless you are exceptionally gifted with graphics or programming before you enter SL, don't expect to be able to start selling stuff as soon as you arrive. It takes time to build well in SL.

I used to be Kimberly Sol, but I haven't logged on in a while. I got too frustrated with having all the tools I needed to create anything I wanted and nowhere to do it because of all the @#%$ing land barons.

If you are looking for island land to rent and a cool group to hang with, buzz me inworld - a good bit of land has opened up in our space-sim, Sunweaver Space. Shockwave Yareach.

Did you know that you can put your RL name up there now. SL changed the way they handle names. Your old SL name is now just a login name (my SL username is now "emi.halcali", for example), and in your profile you can change your display name to read anything you like. I changed mine to my RL name. You may want to do similar :)

Pay-as-you go is fine, I just don't like automatic fees, because it increases the pressure to "get my money's worth" by being on as often as possible... which I prefer to avoid.

Note that because of issues such as this (https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/STORM-872), a number of users turned the option off last fall and never turned it on again.

If one really wants to be sure everyone can see a display name, the best bet is probably to grab one of the free Titlers floating around and use that instead. (This also allows one to change it more than once a week.)

I'm friendly with a couple of club owners, plus there's The Shelter, if you're familiar with it? It's been around since summer of 2004, currently located near the Isabel infohub. It's primarily a newbie-friendly hangout, but they support live music, and the geek population is strong there, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are other Tom Smith fans besides me. If all else fails, they'd certainly be willing to sell ad space:

Thank you for your interest in sponsoring the Shelter!

-=Rotating Wall Ad=-

The cost for purchasing a spot on our rotating ad network is L$175/wk. Each ad is displayed for 30 seconds, and there are a maximum of 20 ads, so your ad will be visible for 30 seconds every 10 minutes. The Shelter averages 300-400 visitors each day, so your ad will be seen by a large number of potential buyers.

If you are interested in setting up a rotating ad, or have any questions or concerns, please contact FireEyes Fauna. We will need a texture to be used for the ad, as well as an inventory item to be handed out when the ad is clicked. This item can be an Object, Landmark, Notecard, or any other item that you feel will best suit your interest.

Thank You,

FireEyes Fauna
Shelter Coordinator

I'd also suggest getting in touch with the Radio Riel (http://radioriel.blogspot.com/) folks; this sort of thing might be right up their alley.

These days, premium account holders don't have to buy land if they want a house; Linden Labs is perfectly happy to let you have one of their virtual spec houses. Limited size, limited prim count, but perfectly acceptable if what you're wanting is a little privacy to change clothes, unpack boxes, and so forth.

Jenrose Meredith. I live in Fae Valley, where they have a lovely little club, "Medieval Blues". Which is about what you might expect. My landlord is a sweetie, Lissa Fimicoloud, and she DJ's at a number of clubs and loves having live music in her club.

I'm not in-world very often anymore, because being creative in real life and being creative in second life aren't quite compatible.

Online social gathering place. A virtual world, much like a multiplayer role-playing game, except the idea is to hang out, make friends, play dollhouse, etc. (Although there apparently are some games there -- sort of a weird "virtual LARPing" or somethin'.) Like many free-to-get-into environments, you can give them lots of money to upgrade stuff.

Or you can do a profession there and make in-game cash (which is directly convertible to RL money)

Last I checked, the L$50,000 I raised for you 2 years ago is convertible to over $150.00 in RL funds. :) I've converted about $70.00 worth of L$ myself, and I still have about L$9000 left from the DJ'ing I used to do at Organica.

I used to be on often, but lost interest when clubs I went to closed/moved, and then work hours increased cutting time available to go on even more. I still go in monthly to renew my rent there (a whole $2.50 US per month, I think that I can afford it even when not using it much). But otherwise, maybe on the weekends when I have a breather.

At work we had a project to develop an island for advertising purposes. We spent a lot of time on it, then the project was canceled. Not Sl's fault, but I haven't been back since. If someday you see an awareness campaign for the Naval Air Warfare Center, Training Systems Division, come see the mock ups of our simulators. Very cool stuff, if you want to learn to pilot of navigate without dying when you crash. Just hit reset and you are alive again. I need one of those buttons!

It requires a pretty good computer setup and total wetware focus. I have a toddler...and gremlins.

I miss Second Life a LOT.
