To heck with MMORPGs, I want these guys making movies:

some of the best effects and brightest minds in the industry are doing games and commercials.

I used to feel that way about the Final Fantasy ads. Then they did make a movie, and it flopped.

Even when Luther's plans caused the death of Earth, he's still scheming to take it over. Doesn't the guy take any responsibility for his actions?

Hollywood makes great trailers but lousy movies.

I concur. No idea what's going on in that, but it's AWESOME!

Great on the action scenes and images, less so on any aspect needing more than ten seconds?

I saw this, and thought: If I had money and time to play online video games, I would play this one!

I'm assuming this is Blur studio still, as they did the first trailer.

To heck with DCO, I want them to make A Gentlemen's Duel into a full length movie. Although The Goon looks terribly awesome.

Pretty much. A trailer is designed to do two things. First is to get you to buy a ticket. Once that's done, they don't care whether or not you like the movie. The second is to get you to buy a ticket despite any bad reviews the movie gets.

{The Hollywood ideal.}

Person 1: Hey did you see the new [director] movie?
Person 2: Yeah, it sucked ass.
1: But the trailer looks so awesome! I think I'll see it anyway.
2: You'll be soooorrryyy!!
2 hours later..
1: You were right, it sucked!
Person 3: Hey is that new [director] movie any good?
1+2: NO!!!
3: Uh, well I'm going to give it a chance. The trailer was fun so it can't be that bad right?
1+2: Yes! It is that bad!
3: No it can't. See ya!
Months later
1: Hey, that movie is coming out on Blu-Ray!
2: Director's cut?
1: Yeah and extra footage.
2: Maybe the new stuff won't make the movie so bad.
1: Well looking back, that movie doesn't seem that bad. There were some good parts. I forget most of it. What the hell, the box art looks good.

Repeat ad nauseum

Long story short, Luthor starts his Master Plan which triggers a superpowered war that devastates the Earth along with depopulating the hero and villain populations. Then Brainiac swoops in to fight everyone and get their powers. Lex goes back in time and seeds Earth with Exobites (Brianiac technology that gives people the powers of the supers he's studied) to fight the future invasion.

When he told the Justice League what happened, he played the "this is my chance to fix my mistakes" card. Now we know the mistakes he's trying to fix aren't what we thought they were.

I don't have previous MMORPG experience, just regular RPG like Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age, but I have had a blast playing DCUO. I am playing the PC version. I keep hearing about how bad the controls are and how the console port to PC sucks, but I'm not seeing it.

I love this game, and hope they get a Lantern mentor in time for the GL movie :)

Let me restate it, then: I'd like the people writing the DCAU movies... to have these guys doing the animation. Just once. I mean, I love Bruce Timm's line work, I really do -- but imagine, say, Crisis On Two Earths done in this style.

No argument there. The DCAU movies were great and the cut scenes for DCU are equally great and putting the best of what the two have to offer would make something awesome. There's also a huge difference between a movie trailer and a cut scene for a game. There's also two different groups of people doing movies and game cinematic (AFAIK). The truth of the matter is that movie trailers, and to an extent game trailers, are often more exciting than the actual movie/game.

If these guys can maintain the same quality of animation for something as long as Crisis on Two Earths, I'd buy it in a heart beat and get copies for my friends in my superhero RPG group.

I wonder if the people saying that are normally console gamers. I haven't played it (there's really only time in my life for one MMORPG) but I have played City of Heroes for almost 7 years now and it's still fun. I think the complaint is that you have fewer powers per se, but you get more combos as you progress. And combos are easier with a controller than keyboard. At least that's my theory from having zero experience so take it as you will.

I will say that SOE does have a record of taking a good game and ruining it in the pursuit of wringing as much cash out of their players as quickly as possible without thinking of the long-term consequences.

I'm a former CoH player and current DCUO player. I can say definitively that the DCUO PC controls suck rocks.

The problem is they tried to implement console-style movement and combo-attack controls using a keyboard & mouse combination. This could have worked, except that all of the combat combos are done with mouse-clicks. It is annoying, unnecessarily difficult, and hard on the tendons in my hands and wrists. I had to quit playing for a week just to get the pain to subside.

If they would give you the option for more traditional type keyboard & mouse controls, the game would rock. The graphics are very well done, the storylines are engaging, and the missions are generally interesting. The shining beacon of the game however is the Acrobatics movement ability. It is freaking AMAZING. It makes you feel more like a superhero than Super-speed and Flying combined.

I pulled my auto-renewal on the game so I won't be playing past the end of the month, and not much until then.

Too bad. A few bad decisions ruined a REALLY good game.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you'll be coming back to CoH with the new lv 50 content. The game has been pretty busy these last few weeks since max level characters now have something to work towards and even gain "level" (now it's 50+X)

If you were interested I found a video review of DCO here

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/2757-DC-Universe-Online (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/2757-DC-Universe-Online)

"How does it compare with City of Heroes? Well let me put it this way in a race Detective Comics Online trips over the first hurdle and chips a tooth when it lands."

"I wondered what my randomly generated class was. Then I found out it was the class of mashing the attack button like a lab rat at a food dispenser."

This is excellent stuff. As a DC comics enthusiast/fan I loved the first 'trailer' that you blogged about a while back - just re-watched it (again) yesterday, actually - and now this one. Thanks for telling us about it, otherwise I would never see them!
