"Clearly the bill as it's currently written is a very bad idea."

Gee, ya think?

These jerkfaces can't be shamed, but at least they can be cowed.

ETA: Changed the wording, to more clearly express that I think shame had nothing to do with the bill being withdrawn. Gov. Gunshy thought he was stirring up, at worst, an ant's nest, and instead he got a Transylvanian mob, complete with torches and pitchforks.

One of the commenters to the article got it right: it wasn't shame, it was the realization that the public climate of opinion isn't ready for something like this...and we can expect conservatives to try again when they think it is. I wish it were otherwise.

Oh yeah. Shame had nothing to do with it. But, as you say, they realized that, for the moment at least -- and I hope the moment stretches into the foreseeable future -- they crossed a line.

Shame, my ass. Maybe shame that they got caught trying to pass this egregious mess.

Thank the DOYC for the people who monitor legislatures for this kind of crap and pull it into the light of day. I'm sure the man who wrote the bill thought he could sneak this one by without anyone noticing.

instead he got a Transylvanian mob, complete with torches and pitchforks.

This, combined with the post about Kenneth Mars earlier in the week, is leading to some really amusing mental images.

Though they did, perhaps, set a new high-water mark for "baldfaced".

The torches and pitchforks shoulda kept coming. Run'em out of town on a rail. The fact that these cretins even though of such a thing...

OTOH... if we suppress'em they become truly dangerous. What *do* you do with folks like that? Killin's bad, lockin'em up is worse, and as you said they have no shame.

D'OH. I have it. Find the MONEY... and wait for one of these jive turkeys to cross the line from lawyerin' to lynchin'. Then sue them all under RICO.

Yes, it will likely cost a life. But a priori restraint is unconstitutional, and unthinkable - it's thoughtcrime, and that way lies madness.
