DDOS

As I'm sure most of you know, there's been a distinct and annoying lack of LJ today.

Spammers I understand: they want to get your money. But I've given up trying to figure the motivation of malicious hackers -- the DDOS guys, the malware and virus writers. I just hope they get laid at some point, and leave the rest of us alone.

And how's your day...?

It figures, I actually start actively using LJ for once, and the DDoS stuff happens. Up yours, Murphy.

My house continues to slog closer to being "done" - I have lights in all the rooms, now! I still don't have toilets installed yet (they're still in boxes, in the garage), but at least I can flip switches in all the rooms and see what's inside! Yay! Tomorrow, plumbing should further progress towards Usable Toilets (And Maybe Sinks). And the electricians have set it up so my new stove can get put in place.

I've been curious about this as well. What's in it for them other than feeling like they've done some grand act of vandalism?

Actually, apparently these latest DDOS attacks do have motivation: a certain Russian social activist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexey_Navalny).

I mean, I don't have evidence that the FSB is behind the attacks, but...

Busy.... I spent about 1/2 the day working on a solution (which ended up being passed onto the request a copy officially option) that I could have found via asking on LJ.

This week looks interesting work wise and then it should finally slow down for the rush (non-work related) into I-CON (NY) next week, where I am running filk, at the largest level I have ever run the track. (More than just the filk GOH, finally.)

Just to get the word out: If you want to switch to Dreamwidth, I have invite codes, and I'm not the only one... and you won't miss our dear Tom; he crossposts everything. You can import everything from here (assuming it stays up long enough), groups, comments, icons, the whole shebang, and then auto-crosspost back over here (as long as it's working, again). If nothing else, having a DW account means all your stuff here can be backed up if the Russians finally impose a permanent pear-shape on this place.

You want a code, see me after class. :)

"Because I can." That's all they need, plus it gives them bragging rights among their hooligan friends.

Basically, it's the same sort of thing that motivates a few rich college kids in Alabama to bomb some black churches, minus the racial aspect.

Some of the DDOS attacks are simply Protection rackets. "Pay us and we'll ensure that our Zombie network of computers don't hit your server so hard that you can't do business." This is especially prevalent in the Eastern European (Romanian) hacker groups. Not all groups operate under this modus, but a good portion do.

Hmm. Now I want to record a song -- DDOS death, where the bot leader is killed in 100 different and graphic little ways. And he spends eternity in Limbo because the devil doesn't want him stinking up hell...

That is true of groups like Anonymous. However, corporate DDOS attacks are usually meant to get protection money. "Lovely website. Brings in money for you, does it? Yeah. You know, for a piece of the action, we can guarantee that nothing happens to your little business here. Wouldn't it be a shame if your customers around the world were, say, unable to reach your server or something?"

Oh, not bad, for a Monday. Home from work, have had snack. :-)Making this for dinner: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/lemon-chicken-breasts-recipe/index.html

Otherwise, just the usual. And, it's raining here today, but in the low 60's, so not too uncomfortable, other than damp.

*hugs*

First day on my own in Chicago. (Husband had to work.) Looked at some apartment, filled out unemployment paperwork. Shopped for meals that can be fixed using one pot in a hotel room.

I missed the DDoS attack. I was having a highly medicalized day.

Damn, I am old.
I got my dentures fitted this morning
I had a mammogram and allergy shot this afternoon
And in between I ate pizza while tornado sirens went off around me.

Work is work. I have things to do, and got some of them done. Hopefully, I'll still be going to work next week... Been watching the news for info on that.

Stupid DDoSers... *grumblegrumble*

I don't know if I'll be renewing my paid LJ account again... though I suppose that may change if the ad-filled "free" version proves too annoying.

I post everything on Dreamwidth now--that way if LJ chokes and dies I still have my posts, if not the comments people made on them in LJ.

I wish there was a way to make LJ automatically forward the comments to the corresponding DW post, but if there is one, I don't know it.

I got one strip on the boat and another strip bent to shape with the heat gun. Hoping I can put in the whiskey plank (the last plank in the hull) by the end of the week.

And the jig I want to insert in one of my songs is just about getting to where I can actually play it...

One of the options in the Manage Accounts -> Other Sites pane is to turn off comments on LJ and point folks at the DW article, where they can comment with OpenID. You can also give access to a given OpenID just as you can a regular DW account; if you look you'll see that [livejournal.com profile] thatcrazycajun has an OpenID access on my DW account for just such an occasion.

Unfortunately, you can't actively make LJ forward the comments to DW; you have to get the people to do it... but the method above is workable, FSVO.

Tom, I don't even think getting laid would help these guys. Assuming that they are even capable of getting laid, that is.
