Great sadness -- we have lost one of the family. Marty Burke, from whom I learned a whole lot about entertaining people with song, has passed away. More information as it's available. Thanks to [profile] drzarron for the heads-up.

If you were unfortunate enough never to hear Marty, the first six videos at this search page are of him performing on the local-access cable show Coffeehouse Cafe.

Hugs and condolences and gentle songs to his wife, Diane Gallagher, and their family. And, Marty, this for you. We will miss you, good bard.

I've attended exactly one SF con, around 1988, in Houston. Robert Asprin was there, and Marty Burke had me all but blubbering with a story about a fisherman whose wife was also a seal.

...He'll be missed.

oh, *no!* I am *so* sorry to hear this -- !!

I remember Marty Burke from, gosh, the late 'seventies/early 'eighties? He came and sang at my college, at mostly-my instigation, after I'd encountered him through fandom. I learned The Old Dun Cow from him, and Peter Kagan and the Wind, and so much more. And he sang Scotch and Soda with such a whiskey-and-velvet voice...

I will miss him.

Peter Kagan and the Wind -- yes. Powerful piece, and powerful performer.

A proper glass to a proper Bard...

*CRASH*

Love the choice of tune for a sendoff, Tom... like this version better myself, though. It's got BAGPIPES (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhJp0W0ku2w).... first time I heard this rendition I was just ga-ga.

Marty was a huge influence on me musically; he was pretty much my introduction to Irish music. Half of the Irish songs I know today, I learned from his recordings.
