We... Are... THE CORPS!

Okay, I am now officially jacked for this. Thor was awesome, Captain America and Cowboys and Aliens look great, Cars 2 looks like a lot of fun, HP and the DH Part 2 and Priest will at least be pretty, Super 8 will be... what it will be, Pirates of the Caribbean opened yesterday, and I am ready for Green Lantern.

What do you think? And what other summer movies have you champing at the bit?

Each trailer for GL has gotten successively better. I hope this is a trend that carries through to the movie.

I liked Thor a lot, though I thought the first half was better consructed, script-wise, than the second. I'm sorry to see that the reviews for the fourth Pirates movie have been so mediocre. Based on the reviews, I won't go near Priest.

I agree with you on Cap, C&A, and Cars 2. I'll probably like HP more than you will. :) And yeah, based on the trailers and ads, Super 8 might or might not work.

I'm really liking what I've seen of X-Men: First Class. I'm intrigued by Another Earth and, incredibly enough, by Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Oh, and Kung Fu Panda 2 might be fun.

That covers the major summer stuff, I think. There's more of interest later in the year.

(The two best movies I've seen so far this year are Rango and Source Code.)

Going to see Thor today. I've heard good things about it. Looking forward to Cap, C&A, X-men, Transformers 3, and Green Lantern. Hmm this could make it one of my most movie-intensive years in a long time since I usually don't go to many movies at all.

From the review I saw, the problem with the pirates movie is that they're taking the sidekick character (Jack Sparrow), destroying any character development he had over the first 3 films, then making him a star. So instead of just being the ID, running around doing what he wants, he has to take on the serious acting role too (serious as in "not funny", not serious as in "professional"). The whole thing seems little more than another paycheck for the actors and an attempt to cash in on the franchise before it's taken superseded by the next craze.

Yes, this will be the Summer Of Awesome!

Saw Thor and loved it! Can't wait for the DVD to come out so I can get it with captions. The acting was superb for a Marvel film; Thor could really turn how people perceive the studio around.

I'm going to see Priest today because the family wants to see Pirates together and has too much stuff going on to go this weekend. I'm hoping it will be entertaining at least.

I've only seen one short, confusing trailer for Cowboys and Aliens, but it looks *fun*. Diana HS reports in her LJ of seeing Pirates yesterday and says "Now, those were mermaids." So I'm hoping to see that one, too, if I can find someone local to go with.

GL looks rad, dunno if I'll see it in the theater, though. If budget will only allow one more theater movie this summer, I'm saving it for TF3.

Though when I first saw stuff for the Cowboys and Aliens trailer, I thought was gonna be a Fallout movie, and I was thus disappointed. (Wild west can pass for the wasteland, and the short flashes of the guy's arm-thing kiiiinda was like a Pip-Boy...)

Thor was indeed an awesome movie and I can't wait for the Green Lantern movie. It looks visually amazing and Ryan Renolds seems to be a good choice for Hal Jordan.

That looks really cool. What the heck is Parallax doing to Hector Hammond??

I'm seriously broke right now, I have a gift card I got for Xmas for Regal cinemas that has enough on it for ONE movie & I'm torn on if I should try to go catch Thor or if I should save it for HP:DH 2.

I admit I really don't think of Jack Sparrow as a sidekick. He's a protagonist in sense of being the central character -- not necessarily the hero, but the one around whom all the action revolves.

I'm too cheap to catch first-run movies (and don't have a posse of geeks to watch them with to make it a social occasion), but your whole list sounds like a great set of DVD's check out of the library next Summer!

...Okay, I am awaiting the release of the Supernatual anime series DVD set in July.

I may well have to watch Legacy on DVD, just so I can catch it in a 2-D format. I saw it once in theaters, and 3-D was the only option. Tiresome and headache-inducing.

Has everybody else forgotten Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II?

And isn't The Hunger Games also coming out?

It was good. I did think parts of it were obviously predictable. You knew Thor would have to be willing to die to protect others to get his powers back because Odin said the line about being worthy. What surprised me was Loki's multiple betrayals and how they almost countered each other.

The movie did an awesome job at making the gods, gods. It was a grand scope that felt larger than life which is what the movie needed to be effective.

Loved the part at the end too, but Marvel Movies needs to stop the teasers at the very end and move them to just after the credits so everyone can go home.

Yeah, Sparrow gets things moving and keeps things moving. But in the first three movies the main plot resolves around the other characters. Sparrow is the ID. He does what he wants when he wants and in the process has the spotlight as everyone else deals with the consequences (both good and bad). Sparrow is the archtype of what a pirate is, but not the hero. That's why I put him in sidekick status since he's not the focus of the plot, but focus of the movie. He's not Kato or Tonto, he's Daffy Duck.

If you had a big shiny red button hooked up to a car battery with a sign saying "DO NOT PUSH", Sparrow would push it ... twice ... after getting shocked once. And that's why he's popular.

Speaking of Tonto, I hear Depp is going to try do to a reimagining of Lone Ranger focusing on Tonto and his relationship with LR.

The film I've been most stoked for is Pirates, which, if things hold up, we see today. I am ignoring the reviews, seeing as how none of the earlier films got the respect I think they deserved.

Next on the list, to my surprise, is X-Men First Class. The previews and trailers make me think there might be a really good plot in there. Most of the other films don't seem to have that.

Then would come GL, Super 8 and HP. Capt America trails far behind, and I am not interested in Thor (I find his comics to be dull, sad to say).

It was a cosmic cube, an artifact of great power that can alter reality. It's one of those "too powerful for anyone to have" objects best kept in the Asgard vault.

*potential spoiler*
So powerful is the cube, that eventually it becomes sentient with a personality based on whoever wielded it before.

Which is a big problem, because it's generally wielded by people like Thanos and the Red Skull.

I mentioned it at the top, but I'm not hopeful -- but then, remember that I don't like the last two books in the series.

Anne told me about The Hunger Games. Sounds kinda interesting, but I'll have to see (no pun intended) the execution.

I loved the first POTC film. I was really, really repelled by the racism in the second POTC (http://gardnerhill.livejournal.com/12695.html), and alternatively repelled-by-racism and bored by P3. I just wish they'd spent 1/10 of 1% of their "make the ships fighting in the Maelstrom look really awesome" budget on tying together plot threads so that no one would have to go to the damn website to figure out what the hell happened.

Much as I love Geoffrey Rush and Ian MacShane, I'm taking a raincheck on P4.
