On the reboot itself, if it's not broken, don't fix it. If it's slightly damaged, don't fix it with a sledge hammer. If it's FUBR, switch to indies, or read a normal book!

I had an LJ posting back in January about comics and rebooting in general (http://alverant.livejournal.com/35733.html). To sum it up, rebooting is necessary and has to be done on a regular basis to gain new readers. It also has to be done right, not with a hammer but with a guillotine to separate old from new. Otherwise we're going to have a confusing continuity requiring you to read hundreds of comics to understand.

If a comic is worth reading and has a good story, people will buy it regardless of who it's from or what the numbering is. Look at all the indies like Dark Horse who started taking Marvel and Dc's lunch money. The argument that fans only want the same old tired stories is provably false when you see them run to these others who have untried and new stuff. Same with movies -- the Matrix was once a new and novel idea, and it made a fortune because it was new and novel. And now we have an entire genre of "you live in a machine" movies and stories out there, leeching off that single new idea.

I'm not overly concerned one way or the other with the renumbering bit. But I do think it confuses newbs rather than helps them. "Last month was 125, and this month I'll buy... 1?"

probably. But then, the movie version was much better. I've heard that they wanted to do something similar where the matrix was actually set in the old west and thus there were no hackers to endanger the machines. But one guy on horseback learned how to change anything he wanted, and thus went from town to town on his trusty steed and righting wrongs while those he saved branded him a devil and such. They didn't make the film, because that would be putting Descartes before the horse.

All punning aside, it's said that every story can be boiled down to something someone else did before. I'm not concerned one way or the other; my particulars and my details of what I am writing about are unique to the story I'm telling. Just because it falls under the heading "Man Vs Society" doesn't mean I'm not going to write it and make my characters' lives hell.
