Projected to go up the coast and into Canada. If you are along the Eastern seaboard, from North Carolina to Maine and especially New Jersey and New York, GET OUT NOW or HUNKER DOWN. And sound off so we know you're okay.

I have to admit to a certain amount of...not disbelief exactly, but somewhere between skepticism and amazement. I mean, I hear what everybody's saying, but...all the preparations people talk about, even here in New York, seem unreal.

Myself, I'm taking the train up to Springfield, MA for Pi-Con, and going back on Sunday. (If the train's running on Sunday, of course.) So...I guess we'll see.

So far, so good. I'm well provisioned and I'm eating all the perishables now, in case I lose power on Saturday. The storm system that's hitting here now is actually delaying Irene's arrival.

I'm hoping to park my car between two large SUVs tomorrow evening, before the storm arrives, but as long as I'm away from that standing dead tree in the parking lot (which really should have fallen over by now) I will be happy.

Paula and I will be visiting friends in Tennessee. That should get us far enough away from the coast. Our daughter Amanda will stay here to keep an eye on the cats. About the worst we expect is that power will be out for a while.

Our nabe is inland enough, and high enough elevation, that we should be okay. (Hey, it's got "Heights" in the name!) Tomorrow we fill the fridge and freezer because although our area should be fine, there will be flooded roads and trucks might not get through or power might fail. Not just a French toast run, though; we need to do a grocery shop anyway.

According to All forcasts I've seen, by the time it hits MA (which is where me and Stormsdotter live) it'll be downgraded to a tropical storm. not sure what remenant will make it past us...

Best of luck to you and the installations you're taking care of, unclekage.

We're staying put. Here in Williamsburg, VA, we're inland enough avoid storm surges, and with some luck the brunt of the storm will be less by the time it hits here.

We've checked in with some folks on the Peninsula, and offered them crash space, while at the same time checking in with folks further inland to see if THEY have crash space available.

O, the joys of planning for emergencies when one has 5 cats and no guest room.

(and oh, the joys of posting while very tired and cant'read the screen properly.... my apologies for any and indeed all mis-spellings)

Better to be safe than sorry. If you hunker down, make sure you've got extra supplies of stuff.

well, since dare county imposed a mandatory evac order, our vacation is delayed. so I won't be driving during it or trying to ride it out on the outer banks.

we're fairly well stocked here in fredneck. our current plan is drive out sunday afternoon to the hotel in va & wait there to see if we can get to our vacation spot on monday.

This is all Irene willing of course.

Yes I may be moderately nuts. I don't care. I've waited all year for this "break" and I'm going stir-crazy.

Irene is not supposed to hit the Boston area until Sunday (heavy rains starting Saturday night), so I will sound off again on Sunday (assuming that I am not offline) if I am okay.

Fortunately, I am in a part of Canada well outside any of the projected tracks (much like nearbye Michigan) but I am a tad concerned about friends and family back on Long Island, and that moved to NJ, as well as a few that moved to Virginia - and my sister in Florida who picked now to visit our mother on Long Island...
