Greetings and howdy-do, gang. I've been out of town for a week, and away from the 'Net since Saturday morning, and I have to sort through the e-mail. But spring is springin' up all over the darn place. Out here in Ay-Squared, all the trees are budding nicely, some have got half-formed leaves, the lilacs are mostly out, and the next few days of rain should make the whole place just gorgeous by next Tuesday. How is it where you are?

Positively beautiful, truth be told. And here I am, sitting in my room, torn between studying and not wanting to study, and mostly not studying.

Last week, the Big News was former pro football player Pat Tillman, who gave up a lucrative NFL career to join the military, and who was killed in Iraq. This article about his funeral (http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/05/04/SPG5K6FD091.DTL&type=printable) is worth a read.

Weatherwise, perfect for this time of year: Low 70s, clear-to-partly cloudy, right at the cusp between the end of spring and the beginning of summer. I'll be planting my vegetable garden this weekend; we could use a little more rain before the dry weather.

Otherwise, peachy!

I wanna live where you are!

We're well past the tree-blooming season down here in Tampa, FL. Highs in the mid-80's, lows in the mid-60's. A day full of rain followed by a week spent torching the humidity out of the air. But the jasmine that grows everywhere and is blooming now makes going out for an evening drive absolutely heaven - out of nowhere, hitting pockets of divine scent in the cool air while cruising around aimlessly makes life worthwhile some nights.

On second thought, I think I'll stay here! ;)

For those who have been following the furor about Disney dumping Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 911 (http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/index.php)... well, that may have all been a publicity stunt (http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=518901). More as it develops.

The weather down here in Lewisburg, TN, is schizo. Gets nice and lovely warm during noon and afternoon, and then the sun goes down.

Over a 24 hour period, the temperature goes from 60 to 70 to 80 to 60 to 50 to about 45.

During the day, however, it is lovely and sunny. Everything with even a mild inclination towards planthood is merrily spraying pollen everywhere, our only unspayed cat has kittens, and the other seven seem to be in contest to see who can shed the most in the shortest timespan.

We went to the nature preserve here in North Oakland County (Michigan) and I was shocked - I hadn't been in about three weeks, and it looked so totally different. It was GREEN! And we saw three fawns, and they let us get really really close and take pictures.

It's just lovely out. I can still walk around comfortably in long sleeves and skirts, and yet it's nice enough that my coat has been packed away. My dorm room's on the fifth floor, so I've been watching this tree slowly leaf out until POW!-it burst into bloom two days ago. Not a clue what kind of tree it is, but it's wonderful. Huge white-pink flowers.

Unfortunatly, it's also finals season, then back to work so as to afford Worldcon in Boston this year. Whee.

Sounds loverly! The idea of an evening drive sounds great -- somewhere way out where there ain't no light pollution, where you can see the stars. I haven't done that in too, too long. And in about a month, it should be hot enough for the fireflies to come out in force, which is always gorgeous at twilight.

Ooooh! Fireflies! Don't have them down here, but I remember them from visits to Indiana in my storied youth!

About a month ago, my fiance' [livejournal.com profile] rancourt and I took a trip out to a local beachside-park with a friend and his telescope. No city-lights for miles, just pitch-black sky and an almost-unlimited horizon.

I never enjoyed stargazing quite so much before. :)

Here in Ohio, everyone is monitoring the dreaded Emergence of the Cicadas. Which reminds me--Tom once wrote a Ricky Martin parody about the 17-Year Locust. I don't remember where it is on the lyrics page, but it's someplace non-obvious.

Lord, do I have to resurrect that thing? Okay:

We're the terror of your nation,
You're waiting while the penny drops,
'Cause roughly every generation,
We come along and eat your crops.

We're like grasshoppers, only ugly,
We're really noisy, big, and gauche,
So if you don't like stuff that's buggly,
We're up there with the cock-a-roach.

We were a plague of Egypt,
Prob'ly will be one again,
We'll eat up every cabbage leaf
And devour all your grain,
And our sound cuts through your brain -- come on!

Worse than ticks and fleas,
The Seventeen-Year Locust.
We're Acrididaes,
The Seventeen-Year Locust.
You can't push us round,
On all your food, we're focused,
We will all chow down,
The Seventeen-Year Locust.
YA YA!
The Seventeen-Year Locust.

It was one of those things that just sort of happened, but thank you for the compliment.

I don't plan to parody all your stuff, since that would be cheesy, especially considering you have been known to do the occasional parody yourself.

But you should know that I only filk songs I like. :)
