Elmer Bernstein Passes Away
Aug. 19th, 2004 04:19 amOh, man. That's two within a month.
Composer Elmer Bernstein has passed away after a long illness. He was 82.
Mr. Bernstein composed over 250 film and TV scores, including everything from Gunsmoke, The Ten Commandments, and The Magnificent Seven to Airplane!, Leonard Part 6, and Robot Monster (yes, that Robot Monster). Spend a minute going over his film credits at IMDB, and you will be staggered. Go back and listen to his music, and you will be staggered again. Such variety, such skill -- music that always provides the perfect backdrop to the film, yet which effortlessly stands on its own. (Which, trust me, takes enormous effort.)
Farewell, good sir, for a hell of a lot of the music of our lives.
