As I mention this morning at the main site, I'm starting work on Sounds Familiar, the project wherein I finally create new, fancy-shmancy recordings of some stuff.

  • 307 Ale

  • A Boy And His Frog

  • PQR

  • Hellraiser

  • Starlight & Saxophone

  • Storm Dancing

  • I Want To Be Peter Lorre

  • Return of the King, Uh Huh

  • Sheep Marketing Ploy

  • 500 Hats

  • Making Buddha's Hard To Do

  • Walking Along The Beach...

  • Operation: Desert Storm

  • Domino Death

  • Anybody have anything to add to this list? Keep in mind that this is already fourteen songs. I'm just trying to see if there's anything I really, really need to do over now.

Update: I guess I need to specify something. The really big idea here is that these are, modesty aside, a lot of my greatest hits that I don't own the recordings of. I want "definitive" studio version of all of 'em, because there are live versions out there, and I want to do 'em now, as most of the original recordings were done at least ten years ago, and I like to think I've improved a little since then. ;)

"Five Years" and "Rocket Ride" are on the "maybe" list, meaning that if I don't re-do 'em for this I'll re-do 'em sometime in the near future, because I think they both could benefit from revised arrangement. "Superman SLB" is not, because, while it would sound good and probably sound better, it would not be substantially different from the version on Plugged. Same with "Bermuda Triangle", and most of the stuff on Plugged; arrangements would be improved, but -- except for "Rocket Ride" -- not substantially different. The only other big change would be cutting the reverb way back.

I hope this helps you see what I'm trying to do. And thanks for all the feedback so far -- keep it coming!

If I may, I'd like to put in an extra vote for Rocket Ride - it's particularly apropos at this point in time, with all of the folks throwing themselves in the air for the X-Prize these days. In fact, I wonder if Mike Melvill and the others at Scaled Composites have heard it...(toodles off to check the finances to see if we can afford to buy another copy for delivery to Mojave Spaceport...)

I have always adored "I Want My Music On Napster" and inflicted it time and again on visiting friends. *g* But then again, I don't really think you need to re-do this one. ;)

Putting in my vote for "Falling Free." Such a lovely song... and 'tis the one that got me into your music in the first place!

I love that song. I wouldn't mind hearing a redo of it but it is one of my all time faveorites.

You've recorded "Rocket Ride" twice already, plugged and unplugged, and although it's one of my favorites of yours I think that unless there is something more to add, maybe leave it off this time.

I am very keen on the idea of a high production value version of "Five Years" though.

I really, really want to make up a good black leather "Elvis-Aragorn" outfit for Honourable Husband for him to perform You-Know-What at a con sometime, but if I don't get off the dime soon it will have to be the Older Elvis jumpsuit instead and I don't think that will really work as well.

Sorry, that's not on the to-do list. Actually, I'm extraordinarly fond of that recording. And I'd intended instrumentation when we were doing Plugged, but the harmonies worked out so well that we didn't want to mess them up.

The S&T songs will, ideally, be joined with a bunch of others by MarCon. Trust me, it is in the queue.

I'm not taking Rocket Ride off the list just yet. It's a lower priority than the others, but I can do a much better arrangement these days, particularly getting the rhythm right. But, you're right, the live version on Live At GAFilk, which is closer rhythmically and performance-wise to what's in my head, did take some edge off that.

Can I pre-order this now? :) I'm one of those female fans that get all hot and bothered upon hearing PQR played, even "low-fi". The prospect of a studio version...

    (ahem.)

And you've hit all my "old favorites" with the rest of the list. If I were to add another one, it would probably be "Rocket Ride".

Can't argue with you there! A version with instrumentation might be nice, but, you're right, the a capella version as it is is something special. The harmonies *are* beautiful in that song; definitely stirs the heart...

Not gonna be a pre-order, unless demand gets so nutso as we get closer that I decide to actually press it. This is, at first, going to be a downloadable-only. Haven't thought much about pricing. Let me get it done first. ;)

Am I insane, or was there an early version of Hellraiser out there? I seem to recall that it was on a cassette of your songs (likely _Who Let Him in Here_), and then later was a different version (different recording, same lyrics). This would make recording number three.

That was always one of my favorite songs, and I've always been miffed that it's not in a songbook. I'd be interested to hear a new arrangement.

I'd definitely buy it if you press it. Someday I'll probably get set up so that it is convenient to actually listen to music I download, but I'm not there yet. Call me a Luddite if you wish, but I like real pressed CDs.

It was indeed on Who Let Him In Here? But it was an early recording, and when Bill was assembling Digital Acoustic Compilation, I asked if I could re-record it, because I wanted a better performance. I also re-recorded PQR, since on the original version I flubbed one line and got two others out of order.

I've always imagined Hellraiser as a symphonic rock number, with strong strings and harpsichord. And PQR is gonna be gritty metal with a quietly screaming lead guitar and a hell of a bass line.

Heat of the Blood might be good for this project.

Silly thought just came to me, a project I know you'd never do: Pick some songs you like by other artists, get their permissions for you to do 'em, and title the album Tom Smith: Cover Band (or Tom Smith: Attack of the Lounge Lizard)

Have to find me some work so I can get your current new album, durnit!

HotB -- not for this one. As mentioned above, I actually am working on S&T, and that's for that. But the cover album would be a hoot, and I think the track list would not be what you'd expect. And Attack of the Lounge Lizard is a great title.
