One of the best baritones in American film and theater has died at the age of 85. Howard Keel was a man's man, and his memorable vocals graced Annie Get Your Gun, Show Boat, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, Kismet, and Kiss Me Kate. Here's his page at IMDB, and here's the story at Yahoo news.

Everybody, now, and softly:
Old Man River, that Old Man River,
He must know somethin', but he don't say nothin',
He just keeps rollin', just keeps rollin' along....
(Yes, yes, as mentioned below, I know William Warfield actually sang this song in the movie of Show Boat. Just goin' for the tone, is all.

Update: That bastion of exquisite journalism, CNN, has the headline "Dallas" Actor Howard Keel Dead. Asses.

I loved Howard Keel. Seven Brides and Kiss Me Kate are two of my all time favorite movies ...

William Warfield sang that song though (hey, it's a geek moment, waddaya expect?)

Still appropriate though ...

RIP Howard.

Oh, I know Warfield sang it. I just really couldn't think of anything more appropriate, y'know?

Aww. I had a crush on him when I first saw the filmed version of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Such an amazing voice he had.

And just this morning I was kept up WAY past when I should have been in bed, because I just happened to flip into Kiss Me Kate halfway through.

Nuts.

Colon cancer. Gods that's awful.
But definitely he had a very full voice. Plenty of body.

Oklahoma's my favourite Keel...

Wasn't that Gordon MacRae? (Movie at least; Keel could have been in the original Broadway cast)

Like I said ... a geek moment ...

I went through several shows in my head and couldn't come up with anything better either ...

May he rest in peace; may those who knew him find comfort.

"Kiss Me Kate" is one of, if not my favorite movie musical of all time. Keel is amazing in it. A true talent lost.

Darn. His Petruchio, and the character in Kismet whose name escapes me, definitely had a (pre-PC) touch of the Nyrond about them...and what a voice. He will be missed.

It could have been worse: CNN could have used the headline "Howard Keels Over". (Or possibly "Howard Keel's Over". Not sure which I like better.)

Not to disrespect a fellow baritone or anything. :)
