Today is the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. Here is how cool they are: They make me like Elmo and Adam Sandler... together, even. If you want to link up to any particular favorite video clips, go for it; I'll start with "Rubber Duckie, "Bein' Green", and "Batty Bat".

The big video release today is Pixar's Up (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition + Digital Copy and 4 Disc Combo Pack with Digital Copy and DVD [Blu-ray] Anti-Planned-Obsolescence Edition). There's also Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days and, if you haven't got a version already, Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut (integrating Tales from the Black Freighter, Under the Hood, and possibly some other live-action footage). Anything else just released we need to know about?

Happy Birthday, Neil Gaiman!

My Friday concert at WindyCon was going to be TomBoat, i.e., me and Toyboat. Reasons of time and practicality deep-sixed that for this weekend, although we really, really want to do it soon (I hope CapriCon, possibly not till DucKon). So, I was gonna drag out a bunch of stuff I don't usually do. Any requests? ("Heat of the Blood" is excluded from this offer.)

Dragon Age: Origins rocks really hard. It's funny: the forums are filled with people who can't get it to load, patch, work, nothin' (I've had no problems, apart from a single crash to Desktop); they complain because it's too hard, too easy, too old-school, too innovative, they hate that it's party-based, they want multiplayer and MMO; they say that the graphics are dated, and point to the game being in development for years. But BioWare did what they wanted to -- they created a new game world, which I think looks very good, with a superb, detailed story filled with rich characters and cool plot twists and astonishing detail. It's not a loot-fest, a click-fest, a FPS with orcs, or anything besides what it is. It's tough, at least to a duffer gamer like me; I set it to Easy, and I'm still getting slaughtered in some fights, the first or second time through. But dang is it rewarding, shocking, and fun. If you're interested, I think you will like it a lot. If not, no big.

What's goin' on in your quadrant?

DJ Squeaks, the secondary news reader and token ingenue on my show, got DA:O for both herself, and her SO, Alex. She told him that he was gonna end being a gaming widower (I use "gaming widow" for my SO's for when I game), and got him a copy so he could occupy his time LOL.

Personally, I await next Tuesday, with "Star Trek" coming out on DVD (I don't do Blu-ray). Saw it twice with Becky, loved it!

Got to see DA:O yesterday. I can see how it would be addictive.

Since as far as I know they don't make a version that works on Mac, I'm reasonably safe :-)

On the video front, Justice League: The Complete Series.

Also a half-day for the younger kid, and parent-teacher conference for her tonight (if the teacher's not running too late; it's just barely enough time for me to get to work as is).

Sesame thoughts after I drop her off at school.

I'm getting ready for Windycon too. I got my filk album list (have and want) about ready, I listed the panels I want to attend. The filk is light this year with 3 concerts (you, Lukeski, and Amy McNally). I plan on doing some gophering but it won't be enough to get in free next year. That's OK, I like helping out and it makes me feel more connected to the con.

I am waiting for Morley Safer to arrive. Really. (There are some really cool things about doing PR for a museum. Being able to say that is one of them.)

Will note that today is also the release date for Stephen King's Under the Dome, coming in at over 1,000 pages. I'll get the forklift.

hmmm... 2 suggestions (besides make a recording available for those of us who can't attend.)

1 - Something out of the Rocky Horror Muppet Show.
2 - The Worst Job There Is

What's goin' on in your quadrant?

Not much. The car went in for the 100k maintenance today and work is a little hectic, but that is normal for work lately. (Time to get back to it.)

Not much like Oblivion at all, actually, except for the main story, which involves building a force to combat a demonic threat. Oblivion is a first-person exploration game, with occasional NPC companions and an open-ended world; DAO is a third-person story-driven game with party-building and party tactics being extremely important and, as far as I can tell, a definite end to the game (in about a hundred hours or so). NPC interaction is vital in both, but bluntly it's a lot more abstract in Oblivion. The DAO interface takes a little getting used to -- the primary action is a right-click, not left -- but it's not that tricky. Both games have a lot of staying power and replayability, but again for different reasons: DAO has multiple specific origins and a lot of ways for the main quest to play out, while Oblivion is very expandable and it's always cool to try new tactics on the Oblivion plane.

I'll have to pick up UP. I'd like to get the Blu Ray since it's about as cheap as the regular DVD, but then I can't lend it to my parents or my brother to play for his nephew. So regular DVD it is. Ultimate Watchmen will wait. I may pick it up one day, but not just yet.

I couldn't stand Adam Sandler on SNL, and his movies are hit-and-miss. But from all I've heard he's one of those seemingly rare genuinely nice people in Hollywood. I like the fact that he populates his movies with lots of his friends from when he was growing up and a nobody.

DAO looks interesting. I'm behind on my gaming though. I still have Bioshock sitting on the desk, waiting to be installed. *sigh*

Besides PQR, which someone else mentioned already, I'd love to hear "Storm Dancing" in person. Also "Dervish" but you asked specifically about things you don't normally do, and I'm quite used to seeing you perform "Dervish" (not that I would EVER object to this!).

I'd also love to hear "Falling Free" but given that it's a duet, I'm not sure how feasible it is?

Sadly, I never learned to play upright, even though my favorite music is Jazz (particularly Monk, Weather Report, Miles). No 5 string either - those are expensive!

I did once get to sit about 5 feet from John Pattituci and watch him play that custom Martin 6 string of his. *** drool ***

I'm just happy to have 24 frets and 4 strings. Some unfortunate people only have 21 frets. ;)

I have long fingers that don't like to stretch much, oddly enough, so a 5stringer is painful for me to play. I tend more towards the rock end of the spectrum (Sting, John Deacon, and Adam Clayton are my bass heroes) with a bit of blues thrown in here or there.

Playing a knockoff Fender P-bass, though I'm saving up for a lovely Ibenez with Bartolini pickups. There's my *drool*. :-)
