Hugo Winners

Right here. Anne will be pleased that Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke won Best Novel; I think we're all pleased that The Incredibles won Best Dramatic Presentation - Long (an excellent innovation, by the way, separating TV shows and fan films from movies). And congratulations to Elizabeth Bear, matociquala, who won the John W. Campbell Award.

Thoughts? Have you read any of 'em? ;)

I loved Jonathan Strange, but for me the real excitement was the Not-A-Hugo Award winner, Elizabeth Bear (matociquala). I'm really excited about her writing. :)

Oooh! I got to hear Mike Resnick read "Travels with my Cats" at the Norwescon-before-this-last-one. I thought it was absolutely lovely. I'm so glad he got a Hugo for it.

He's also an awfully nice man.

He *is* really nice & tells fun African-safari stories.

I was also glad to see Farah Mendlesohn win [for Best Related Book: The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction]; I got to chat to her a bit at Noreascon, & she's a major Bujold fan [not that that guarantees Hugo-ness, but at least indicates an appreciation of primo creativity which probably stood her in good stead on that particular book].

Jonathan Strange is on my "to read" shelf, glaring at me. I would've read it already, but other books keep cutting in line (currently reading Sean Carroll's Endless Forms Most Beautiful, highly recommended; and rereading LotR.)

Best Short Story: "Travels with My Cats" by Mike Resnick

Am I the only one in the world who doesn't like Mike Resnick? He keeps getting nominated for Hugos, and every time I try to read one of his nominated stories, it turns out to be utterly dreadful and boring. And sometimes not even pretenting to be SF or fantasy.

I've read Strange and Norrell and reviewed it for a website that promptly went belly-up before printing it. The Hugo is well-deserved for the amazing thought and work that went into the book, and I'm glad she got it. JS&MN is a pretty difficult read, and that, combined with size, could have turned a lot of people off.
