To my friends in southern Texas: GET THE FUCK OUT NOW. To friends in Louisiana: Watch your asses, here it comes again.

Make sure you have a few days of food and water, any prescription meds, a change of clothes and a few changes of underwear, a flashlight and radio both with working batteries, and personal papers.

Y'know, I thought of that this morning, but even I'm not that vengeful. If Chimpy McAssHat hisself was down there sittin' on the roof surrounded by the floodwaters and all that frickin' cleared brush, I'd still do my best to save his sorry ass, just because he's a human being. But I'd give him a piece of my mind, regarding how money, power, wealth, connections, everything doesn't matter when the laws of physics kick in.

From whatreallyhappened.com:
For those buy-bull bangers who insist that god orders all things that happen, I want you to think about something. President Bush claimed that God told him to invade Iraq. (He'll probably say the same thing about Iran.) You all followed right along, cheering, screaming with joy at each fallen Iraqi body shown on the nightly news. Well, where was your God then? Seen any hurricanes strike Iraq? Or Iran? No?

Better think this one through. Bush coveted the oil wealth of Iraq. In order to get that wealth Bush bore false witness to We The People, the Congress, and the world. Bush then stole that wealth, and killed a lot of people in the process. And by claiming that God told him to do all that Bush took the Lord's name in vain, I think. So, he's batting 500 in terms of breaking the Ten Commandments, and all who support him are accessories to the crime.

And what is the result? Did your God deliver a swift and easy victory to George Bush by flinging natural disasters onto the infidel?

No, the natural disasters are hitting the nation that invaded Iraq based on that false witness thing I mentioned before. Hurricane Katrina wrecked our largest seaport, through which America's war machine exports much of its cargoes of death around the globe. Katrina also savaged the oil infrastructure, and oil is the lifeblood of conventional warfare.

Bush's defenders desperately tried to explain away Katrina as God's punishment against the gays or the blacks, but as Rita bears down on those Texas refineries, the message, if there really is one, is clear. The hurricanes are not pointed at gays. The storms are aimed at the United States' capacity to fuel its war machine.

Now for myself, I'm a non-believer, so I see Katrina and Rita as the result of seasonal unstable air meeting inadequate preparations. But for those of you who buy into the God gambit, your own beliefs have to be telling you that Bush lied when he said God was directing his actions, and those costumed molesters holding those collection plates who cheered Bush along, well, they were lying too. They have broken 5 of the 10 commandments. And they have tricked you into breaking them as well. Because you can no longer pretend you don't know something is very wrong, and that Iraq is an unholy war.

So, you are all damned. Damned, damned, damned! Damned to hell. And there can be no redemption while Bush and his war-mongering Neocons are still in office. There is no absolution if you know a war of conquest against an innocent people is going on and you do nothing at all to stop it. The priests cannot forgive your sins if they share those sin. Havong worked so hard to trick you into sin, would they really be eager to get you out?

You're looking at the choice between regular and extra-crispy for all eternity so long as Bush and the Neocons, and indeed everyone who lied to start the war in Iraq remain in power.

Yessirree, regular, or extra-crispy! Kinda sucks, doesn't it?

Not even that random. Those areas are highly susceptible to hurricanes. The season was predicted, accurately, to produce many, and more powerful, storms than usual.

The odds of a Gulf strike, or two, are LOTS easier to figure than, for example, the ones on filling a full house holding two pairs.

Reminds me again of my goal of getting all our household crucial papers scanned (if necessary) and onto a thumb drive. I mean, how much does a 256MB jobbie go for, these days? Easy to update, can live in the emergency go bag.

Now I just need to get the new scanner (all-in-one, actually) online.

Oh, and Rita just made Cat 5. Get the hell out, go to New Mexico, take as much critical stuff as possible...

The ranch is not that near the coast, but the rain and winds will do some damage. W's daddy's office on Memorial Dr. in Houston is another story. I used to work on the ground floor of that building. His offices are on the top. (There's nothing like having Secret Service agents give you the hairy eyeball when you walk from your office to the restroom.) That's a prime example of real estate that could see some flooding.

Yep. I actually got that. But even to people who are still living in 1066 and haven't connected cause with effect, the fact that hurricanes hit the Gulf coast regularly ought to tell them something.

(Yes, I know. Some of them have already weighed in about NOLA, which takes us back to the first verse...)

My thinking has been twofold, since I've got the house now.

OPTION 1: Shelter in place.
Sometimes the best thing to do is stay where you are. In that event, based on what happened with Katrina, I need to plan to be cut off from help for up to 5 days. Cut off means help can't get to me and I can't get to help. Food, water, meds, clothing, etc.

OPTION 2: Run like hell.
Sometimes the best thing to do is get the fuck out of Dodge. Which means I need a direction to go, means to get there, supplies packed, family photos packed and important papers packed. I can buy new furniture but photos are irreplaceable. I also need means to get my cats out with me, because if it's sufficiently bad that I can't shelter in place then they can't either.

I still need to work out the details of these plans, because I've been a lazy SOB too. But at least there are the beginnings of a plan, which is good.

I actually disagree with that statement. It's possible at a poker-based table game to know precisely what the odds of the dealer holding two pair are, given known information. Every card in the deck is a known quantity, and all outcomes can be calculated and their relative likeliness shown exactly as a table.

Weather is inherently chaotic and it is impossible to measure all factors. Climatologists know from ice samples that some climate changes happen on patterns of centuries or millennia, and some changes are not part of a pattern at all. With hurricane data available from no earlier than the 19th century, and deteriorating in quality the farther back you go, the odds of "strike on New Orleans this year or not" are almost no better than guesswork.

It's only "Will a Category 5 hurricane strike New Orleans in the next 100 years?" which has a statistically significant answer, which is "yes." The Corps of Engineers phrased this as a "1% chance every year" (an incorrect interpretation of the odds) which is why Cat 5-strength levees were ultimately not built.

And if you don't spot the mistake, let me put it this way. Would you take 100 1% chances of being shot in each of the next 100 hours, or the certainty that you WILL be shot sometime in the next 100 hours? You might be shot several times in the first scenario, but I'd still take it. :)

But still...fuckin-a... Whichever scenario you're looking at, you BUY A BULLETPROOF VEST. The "bureaucracy" did not "commit murder" in New Orleans, but Congress definitely committed negligent manslaughter by means of appropriations bills.

In Steve Jackson Games' In Nomine, the Archangel of the Wind, named Janus (An ofanite, an angel of motion and action), has a potent Tether (sacred spot/locus/power-source, basically) wherever the winds are strongest on the planet. Janus is one of the most elemental archangels, even among the 'Elementals' left surviving (David of Stone and Gabriel of Fire are the other livers; Oannes of the Waters is dead); he's a force for change in all its forms and sudden, violent change in specific-- he's got more than a bit of a temper.

I don't often imprint games -> reality, thank god, but this whole thing coming on the heels of Katrina makes me wonder who pissed Janus off, and what he intends to do with all of that power. :P

Just a few brief comments:

1) For those in Texas who are evacuating--take family pictures with you. In case your family gets separated it's an excellent resource to help in the search effort.

2) I'm waiting to hear from the Christian Coalition/Moral Majority/American Taliban to find out why God is punishing Texas.

3) Be safe, everyone. This monster's bigger than Katrina and it's going to make a bigger impact on everyone--from higher gas and food prices to insurance rates and tempers. Remember we're all humans, and we all deserve the same amount of respect, so play nice, even in the face of disaster.

Call friends. Walk. Stiff a cab. ANYTHING, just get out.

This is your LIFE we are talking about. I am flabbergasted at people who have been watching the footage of the aftermath of Katrina who then think that they will be withstand a similar intensity storm relatively unscathed. Granted, Texas hasn't got the lowlands that Louisiana did -- the flooding won't be as bad -- but we're still talking winds approaching auto racing speeds. You think that won't push some stuff around?

And what people seem not to get until they go through it at least once: It isn't the winds themselves that'll do the damage, but the stuff that the winds are blowing at you at over 100mph that'll do the damage.

It's not exactly random. For decades, environmentalists have been predicting bigger, worse hurricanes as a result of global warming... but the whole neocon billionaires' club isn't willing to give up a drop of oil as long as there's profit to be made. The icecaps are melting... where do they expect all that water to go?
