I keep asking myself if this is even going to matter. I mean, so many more egregiously awful and illegal things that Bush has done have come to light and....nothing. Nothing happened. Nothing changed. It got spun and spun by the Republican machine and at the end of the day - crickets. I keep looking at each thing as it happens and going "Is this the tipping point? Are we at the bottom yet? Surely THIS will be the thing that causes the American people to start to demand change, right?" And it never seems to be. Just what the hell does a President have to do to get impeached around here these days? Find an appropriately virginal church going blonde and blue eyed fourteen year old girl from Texas by trolling in the "13 and over" chat room the internet, whom he then had kidnapped by Secret Service and brought to him for impure purposes which he then fulfilled in full sight of everyone before calling the newspeople over to "watch her dance" and shooting her in the feet? Would -that- do it? These days, I wonder...
You know.. he seems to think that he has a God given right to do whatever the hell he wants, so much so that it has a mesmeric affect on those around him, lending him an air of invunrability.
Which worries me. what happens when 2008 rolls around?
I heard some amazing spin doctoring on the radio yesterday; Bush's white house spokesspinner was saying about the leak that some Democrats failed to understand the distinction between different types of leaks: that one can choose to leak classified information, it's perfectly legal, it's just a question of when it is or isn't safe for national security.
A) How the heck is leaking inaccurate information that gets us into a volatile war in the Middle East and earns us millions of sworn enemies around the world good for our security?
B) Apparently the Shrub doesn't understand the distinction either, since when he first heard about this leak, he stated in public that he'd fire whoever had done it.
Having talked to a colleague of mine who likes Dubya and believed that Fox News is, indeed, fair and balanced, I'm convinced that no, it wouldn't. He could stab someone in the Capitol while giving the State of the Union address, rip the still-beating heart from the body and eat it and the Shrubistas would not care.
AND they'd find some way to say, "But Bill Clinton <insert anything here>"
I'm just pleased to see that in a Kentucky newspaper; they've been reliably GOP for a while, going for Nixon thrice ('60, '68 and '72), Reagan twice, the elder Bush once, and the Moron-In-Chief both times. Unless this paper is known for a moderate or liberal Op-Ed page in a typically red state.
