Hardcore Nerdity informs us that there will be limited theatrical showings of the director's cut of Watchmen, in anticipation of its July 21st video release. The Blu-ray edition will also include basically a simulcast on July 25 from San Diego Comic Con, including a Q&A with director Zack Snyder.

I'm debating whether to finally jump on the bandwagon and get the Blu-ray edition first. It's got a few more features (although neither the Tales of the Black Freighter nor the Digital Motion Comic, so you know they'll be in another Watchmen Complete gift set at some point), and everything is definitely moving in the Blu-ray direction. In any case, no matter which format, if you watch movies at all with your computer, you should likely get the Director's Cut, because it's also got a digital copy of the theatrical version -- that is, you'll get both. (Getting the Blu-ray version with Nite Owl's ship is entirely up to you. You might want to save a little dosh, though, because Coraline is also released on 7/21, in DVD and Blu-ray.)

Who's planning to get any of 'em? And what else looks good on home video this summer?

There's another version coming out later this year (Holidays are likely), or later, that Snyder keeps talking about that will be Watchmen with Black Freighter edited into the movie.

[facepalm] They're undercutting their own fucking sales. At least I think they are. Peter Jackson and George Lucas did this shit before, and, after a fashion, we caught on.

As previously noted, Pushing Daisies season 2 is out on 7/21. In addition, Dollhouse season 1 and The Middleman (Yay!) season 1 and only (Boo!) are both out on 7/28.

I'll probably hold out on Watchmen to see if there's a complete package later, unless I start seeing "OMG-this-is-so-much-better" raves about the director's cut.

I plan to get whatever set has the Director's Cut and the Black Frieghter / Under The Hood together (not merged in, more like take both separate DVD releases and bundle them together). I figure that may be the Xmas release. Else I will get the Director's cut new and look for a used copy of Black Frieghter / Under The Hood (it does not sound like it is worth the $20 price tag it has for a new copy).

I may end up getting Pushing Daisies myself. I didn't realize until recently that it stars both Kristen Chenoweth and Ellen Greene, which... well, there's an episode of MST3K, Zombie Nightmare, and as they're riffing on the opening credits, Tia Carrera's name comes up, and Crow says, "Tia Carrera!? We might have to pay attention to this." Same thing.

I know what you mean. I'm only going to get ONE copy of the movie and I want it to get the best value for my money. I don't want to buy one copy now only to find the "more complete with extra footage" edition is coming out a few months later.

It's even better than that. Over the course of the series, both of them get to sing. Chenowith multiple times. :)

Ah, here we go . . .

(I have season 1. You should borrow it.)

While I can play Blu Ray via my PS3, I find that upconverted DVD's look good enough that Blu Ray is not currently worth the increased cost.

DVD releases I care about have been sparse for months. Suddenly in July I see The Color Of Magic, Watchmen, Coraline, Green Lantern: First Flight, Middleman, Pushing Daisies and Torchwood: Children of Earth. *sigh*

Pushing Daisies is yet another incredible show that nobody seems to have watched. The creator says he's got a deal with DC to publish Season 3 as a 12 issue comic book series. Hopefully he'll be able to finish off the storylines left dangling from S1&2.

Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5 is coming on July 28th to both DVD and Blu-Ray. The Complete Series also gets released on both DVD and Blu-Ray that day.

I am hoping that DVDs are more or less permanent, because I can't afford to switch to Blue Ray. If BR becomes the norm, that's pretty much the end of my movie watching days.

Not really. Any Blu Ray player will play your existing DVD collection, and if Blu Ray does eventually displace DVD then the price will come down.
