Please note that this has nothing whatsoever to do with the goodness or badness of American Idol. I'll keep my own counsel on that, and let's not get into it. The point is this:
American Idol Winner Taylor Hicks Signs Record Deal
Ummm... isn't that the point? Wasn't that the prize? Most of all, why is the Associated Press telling us this as if it's news!?

What are your non-news stories for the week?

It's news because the rest of the news is super depressing!

I guess I just don't understand why people watch the show even. But thats just me.

I dunno, a faux-amateur musician getting a record deal hitting major news sites depresses me...

For the past freaking month, any story about a Giants game had to start with four paragraphs about Bonds. Giants come back with four runs in the ninth to beat the hated Dodgers? Story leads with Bonds going 0-3. Giants pitchers combine for a one-hitter? Story is how Bonds didn't play that day.

There are 24 other players on the active roster! Let's hear about them in the leader!

I've never watched it.

The only way I'd is if you went on it. You'd do for Idol what Rupert did for Survivor.

Why don't you tell us, Mr. "Never Mind That I Was An Ex-Member Of The Hitler Youth"?

Not to derail the thread, but...

Tom, I've been meaning to ask... What's your drink of choice?
Besides 307, I mean.

"Why Is This News?"

It's not news, it's an entertainment story. Nothing in that section is actually news. A story about who won a contest on a very popular TV show is no less relevant than a story about what TV shows will be on next season, or what movie stars got married. The fact that the media collectively spend more airtime/print space/whatever resources on these stories than they do on what our elected officials are doing to the country is something to rant about.

Heh. I'm way, way too old for their requirements, and I wouldn't submit to the background check -- not that I have a criminal record to hide (which is why they have it, they don't want surprises), I just find it insulting.

I confess; I watched it. It was fun. The 'news' story was just a chance for all the junkies (untold millions world-wide) to get another look.

I was pleased that the guy who won was neither thin nor young-looking. Too bad he couldn't sing.

Chris Daughtry (pictured) was the Al Gore of Idol '06
