When you don't have all that much in your life, and most of your waking hours are devoted to back-breaking labour, a religion that tells you that your trials in this life have earned you paradise in the next is extremely appealing.
That's how the Right-Wing version of Christianity works, really. You find the people that are scared and confused, and you pour comforting lies into their ears. They'll follow you anywhere, because you're strong, and you seem so much larger than life, and you have easy answers for them. It doesn't matter if those answers are right; it matters that they're easy.
The American President really did hit the whole thing squarely on the head, I think.
