September twenty-first.

End of summer.

Bollocks, sez I.

Not that it being fifty two degrees in southern Kentucky made it any easier yesterday morning.

Dammit, I'm on my way down to visit my Dad in Florida, and we're gonna get into a swimming pool.

What summery things do you still want to get done this year? Or, if you've already resigned yourself to fate, what fallish things are you starting to do now? (I do admit that, when we get back up to Michigan, it's a trip to the Franklin Cider Mill for me.)

I'd say a rousing round or five of disc golf, but with the two back surgeries this year, I'm still very tentative about going out onto a course and twisting my back around that much...

Summer ...

... here in London it's about 80 (26-28c depending on who you ask), very sunny but with surprisingly strong winds (Hurricane George is sitting a fair chunk of Atlantic south of us and throwing warm air directly at the south west coast of the UK, but with up to 25mph winds to go with it) so it's a gorgeous day outside (and I had to have help to capture my baseball cap [1] earlier as it decided to go play with the wind!)

So I did laundry last night and put it out to dry this morning before heading off to work ... what a perfect day for drying clothes!

I have a ton of gardening to do, including starting my new compost bin (provided by the local council, free!), car washing, packing for holidays, plus a whole pile of "outside of house" repairs/repainting that needs doing.

[1] Baseball style, though it says "Treasure Island - Flordia" on it, from my last trip down to Tampa/St.Pete

I'm with you on the cider. I went to the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market last Saturday, and picked up a half gallon from Kapnick's Orchard, along with some fresh apples and pears.

What I both want and need to do is walk more, and do it outside for as long as the weather will allow.

We live about four miles from Franklin (Give us a call when you decide to go, we'll come meet you). We got there opening day and have been back several times since. HMmm.. HOT cider mill DONUTS! You got to eat them while they're HOT, they just aren't the same if you wait. We often get friends begging us to bring them Franklin Cider. The problem is that a couple of hours of shaking in the car just isn't good for it. It doesn't travel well.

As to things left to do before winter.. hmm. Haven't made it out boating this year, doesn't look like it'll happen.

Wouldn't mind a quick Saturday trip down the Cedar Point for Halloweekends.. actually been to CP twice this year.

But outside of work to do around the outside of the house before the weather fails us, got most everything done.

I'm done with Summer. Los Angeles had record high temperatures for too large a portion of the past three months, and we've got some forest fires in the area that don't need any more help. Yes, smarty party, there is Autumn in California, even if we lack much in the way of Fall Color.

Mister Ha will probably have new apples at the Van Nuys Farmer's Market this Sunday, so I will probably go visit and bring home some Fujis and maybe a new bottle of apple vinegar. This stuff is so smooth you could practically drink it as is, makes an amazing vinegarette but =will= etch metal as we learned at a SCA Sciences Day a few years ago.

Seriously. I was doing a cooking demo, [profile] hagarson sent someone over to borrow a cup of vinegar and I had a fresh bottle of Mr. Ha's finest. Just shows to go you that even the mildest application of strength can have a visible affect -- in this case, the chemical reaction that made nearly-invisible striations in a folded and forged ingot into a thing of beauty.

With Fall I look forward to getting good frozen pizzas. Since the only food stores are 3-6 miles away, and the closest is atop a long, steep hill, I can't buy any frozen pizzas during the summer because they thaw before I get home, and the only place nearby sell mediocre pizzas.

We hit a farmer's market on the way home yesterday, and last night's dinner was corn on the cob and local apples. That's it. Fresh corn & fresh apples. The perfect New England late summer/early fall dinner. :) And tomorrow night's Rosh Hashana, so I've got the season's passing in mind right now.

Now that it's cooling off, I want to go visit one of the local vinyards and take pictures. Yes, Tennessee has vinyards. Who'd've thunk?

Mayonnaise is a stable emulsion of vegetable oil and egg yolk, flavored with vinegar or lemon juice and frequently mustard (all of which help the emulsion).

Mayonnaise is commonly used as sandwich spread in North America; on chips in northern Europe (especially in the Low Countries, though increasingly in the United Kingdom and France) and in parts of Canada and Australia; on cold chicken or hard-boiled eggs in France; and on sushi, chicken, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and pizza in Japan. It is also eaten in competitive eating contests.

In Dallas it'll be effectively summer for another month or so. Then about a week of what passes for autumn in this hell-hole, and then we'll plunge into the dead of winter.

Me, I'm just trying to figure out a way to get down to the Texas Renewable Energy Roundup (http://www.theroundup.org/) this weekend.

Well, I'm more than ready! :)

The temperature cooling down, the leaves turning, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas rapidly approaching - sorry, but down here in the Mid-South, I gladly say good riddance to one of the hottest summers on record (and likely not to be the last such summer, unfortunately) and welcome fall in all its spectacular glory.

In just a few weeks I can start making all the fallish/winterish-type recipes it's been too hot to make since February :). The smell of cinnamon, nutmeg and cider will fill the house, and we can start to use our fireplace again...(can you tell that fall is my absolute favorite season? :) )

The Equinox isn't until the 23rd. 4:03 am PDT.

2000 *not* being a leap year tended to push things like that a day later on the calendar.

Well, I resemble that remark. I live in Florida. So what do I do as summer wanes... head to my son's baseball practice, of course.

It's 90+ degrees here in Memphis. I want FALL.
I like the nights in the 50s and days almost 70.

We're starting to talk Halloween costumes at Chez Mudd.

I have definitely resigned myself (http://mg4h.livejournal.com/178000.html) to its passing. But I still have a few things I'm getting done before it's completely dead :)

Mostly resealing parts of the deck, and sanding down the rust on the little car so I can Rustoleum them against the winter salt attack.
