[livejournal.com profile] kightp links up to the Oscar™ nominations list.

Who are you rooting for? Who do you want to lose? What do you want to see that you didn't?

In my case, I haven't seen too many of 'em. I'd be very happy if Cars won Best Animated, but I wouldn't mind Monster House (still gotta get to Happy Feet). I'd like The Prestige to get the nod for Best Art Direction, but all the films there looked great. Absolutely want An Inconvenient Truth to win Best Documentary. And, in Best Animated Short, The Little Match Girl just broke my heart.

Martin Scorsese should win just out of principle. I'm also rooting for "Pan's Labyrinth".

This is one of those years where I look at the lists and shrug. Many films I haven't seen and am unlikely to see, actors who I think are being nominated because of who they are (even if deserving for the performance) and and sense that they just don't make movies for me.

That said, I hope to get around to Letters from Iwo Jima and The Departed at some point. I want to see someone find a way for Al Gore to accept the award for An Inconvenient Truth (which seems likely to win). I love that Superman and Captain Jack Sparrow are squaring off for best special effects and hope that the captain wins. And while I think Helen Mirren wins, I would like to see Judi Dench win just because she's always good and was a great M in Casino Royale.

Oh, and I noticed that John Williams wasn't nominated. Which was odd until I looked him up and found that the only films he's slated to work on are Spielberg films. At 75, I guess he's pretty much retired. Which means that all the other composers stand a chance of winning, but also that the Willaims era is ending.

Heads will bloody roll if Dead Man's Chest doesn't get their present for the effects they did with the entirely CGI Davey Jones and crew.

There's a lot of that list that I see and cringe... Especially Meryl Streep for Devil Wears Prada. UGH. I swear, she's simply there because she's Meryl Streep.

Ah well, I'll be sitting around, waving my little flags for Pan's Labyrinth and The Prestige.

Rooting for Helen Mirren.. she's totally rocked her part.

Would LOVE to see Peter O'Toole win, just cause he deserves one for the body of work (The Sean Connery Award) but its Forrest Whitaker all the way. Also pleased to see Will Smith get a nod.

I'd say Eddie Murphy has a good shot. Eddie's got a lot of talent and squandered it, so its nice to see him get his shit together and do something worthy.

Animated... hmm.. "Cars" was good, "Happy Feet" was much more entertaining, "Monster House" is the best over all story... hard call.

Director is a crap shoot. Its Eastwood vs Scorsese, but DAMN, the Academy has GOT to get their heads out their collected asses and give one to Scorsese!

The usual spate of nods to the F&SF films for effects and make-up and such. Hope "Pan's Labyrinth" gets Screenplay..

So, Now just have to wait and start making snacks and watch the show.

Man, it be fun to have an Oscar party and MiSTy it.

Happy Feet was Jesus Christ Superstar starring Elvis and Marilyn Monroe performed by penguins. With Robin Williams as John the Baptist, and a still pre-pubescent Elijah Wood as Jesus Mumble.

Very entertaining, but I was having very very wrong vidding thoughts the whole time.

Hm, have only seen 3 of the movies on the list, so I don't really have an opinion, I guess.

I would like to see Letters from Iwo Jima win. For one thing, it'd be awfully interesting to have a non-English language film actually take the Oscar. (And, for another, it's brilliant. *grin*)

But I've seen almost none of the films, so I can't really root fairly for much of anything.

meh, I've seen PotC 2 and that's IT out of all the noms.

I have Superman Returns but haven't watched it yet (still too busy catching up on TiVo eps)

and truthfully, I have NO interest in seeing the best movies.

tho I did find it odd that Dreamgirls got THREE noms for Best Song. I guess there just weren't too many movies with songs in them this year.

I probably *won't* be watching it this year. Not really rooting for anyone or any movie.

It's sad, really. I'm going to my first-ever gala dress-up Oscars party, and have only seen Pirates II and Cars out of that whole list .......

I also haven't seen many of the nominated movies (much as I'd like to), for the sheer fact that 70% are still in theaters and I just can't justify dropping $10 on a ticket when I've got to put gas in my car, LOL.

I am excited about all the newcomers in this year's acting race, both new to the game (Rinko Kikuchi, Adriana Barraza, Jennifer Hudson) and new to the awards (Forest Whitaker, Jackie Earle Haley, Eddie Murphy, Ryan Gosling). No runaway favorites for me, though my sentiment does lie with Peter O'Toole and "Letters From Iwo Jima."

I really enjoyed it, but it is violent and bloody. It's also quite visually entrancing. I want to see it again, actually, because it's the sort of movie one could notice different things in with each viewing.

I've heard it called "what Mirrormask was trying to be," but I don't think that's a fair assessment of Mirrormask, to compare the two. Completely different stories and themes.

[livejournal.com profile] hanabishirecca was disappointed that there weren't more Fae in it, but he liked it better than I did.

Our local critic, who is picky and a little bitchy, named it the best movie of 2006.

Best actress is a bear.
Judy Dench against Helen Mirren?
I'm glad I'm not voting.

My friend Ms. Geek and I are both ASIFA members, and vote for the Annie awards. She has decided she won't vote for ANY film for Best Picture this year. The only film she really liked, "Flushed Away," got locked out of the Annies. As she put it in her column, "Instead, you had to make a choice between Cars, Over The Hedge, Monster House, Happy Feet and Open Season. GOOD GOD THOSE ALL SUCKED RUNNY EGGS!!!"

I don't quite agree. I think "Cars" was probably the best of a motley lot, but I didn't turn cartwheels over it. Remaking "Doc Hollywood" as a fender-bender wasn't inspiring. If I hadn't gotten a DVD as a voting member, I wouldn't have one; I wasn't moved enough to buy it.

I think animated features are suffering the same dearth of daring that live-action features are showing. There were only a few features I deliberately went to see this last year. It takes more than two handfuls of CGI, name actresses showing their silicone implants and pop-culture references to make a deserving film.

Speaking about "Heroes," in a week or so I'll send you the entire series to date.

Scorsese deserves three, just to make up for not getting Best Doco for The Last Waltz and Best Director for Goodfellas, and one more for good measures. Damn skippy want to see Al Gore take home a statue for An Inconvenient Truth (who was it that quipped a few Oscars ago that "the only person guaranteed to go home with a statue tonight is Tipper Gore"?)

Outside of that, though... I really don't have any horses in this race. I was bored by what I saw of Cars (about the first half-hour, forty-five minutes... but then, NASCAR bores me to tears). Haven't seen the other two noms, or any of the major nominees.

Best Documentary became meaningless when they gave it to that piece of tripe "Bowling for Columbine."

"The Little Match Girl" may have broken your heart, my friend (it certainly broke mine), but I have SEEN the new Pixar short "Lifted" (directed by sound designer Gary Rydstrom) and I can guarantee it will rock your fukkin sox off. It is, no exaggeration, the single funniest short Pixar has ever done, and it gets my vote.

See, the problem with An Inconvenient Truth being up for Best Documentary Feature is that while the information in it is undeniably essential for any human being to learn, the film itself is not all that great. Good, yes, and invigorating and truthful, but as a FILM, it fails, in that a film must be made off of emotional as well as thoughtful connection to be great. As it stands, AIC is a great essay, a great "thinking piece", but a good film. Good. And since the information in it is now widely available, there's no real reason to demand a viewing of it, since if you're dumb and arrogant enough to not believe in global warming, I doubt Guggenheim and Gore will convince you. And I haven't seen Deliver Us from Evil yet, but it does look like a masterpiece.

Oh, and if that piss-poor Etheridge song, or that pathetic attempt that couldn't decide whether to be "clever" or cute, Little Miss Sunshine, wins, humanity is deteriorating even faster than Gore suggests.
