Jan. 31 -- be ready!

So, what are some of your favorite Don Martin gags? This is another list that could go on for awhile, although "Superhero Sound Effects", "Singin' In The Rain" (where the guy starts doing the song, not realizing he's below the residue of a professional spitting contest), and of course pretty much everything related to Captain Klutz are all Just Too Cool.

Indeed. I knew the illustration was by one of the old MAD cartoonists, but Sergio Aragones and Al Jaffee were the only ones to come to mind and I knew it wasn't either of them.

Naturally, it never occurred to me to just click on the link.

I always loved Don Martin's stuff. When Mad TV first came on they had a couple of his comics fully animated on the show, along with some Spy Vs. Spy. It was awesome. I wish they'd go back to doing stuff like that. And, you know, skits that were actually funny, but I digress.

Comedy Central sometimes shows the old MadTV episodes. If you see Artie Lange on it that's the first season. He was only on for one. I think they did those animations for the first two, maybe three seasons. But definitely the first season at least.

- The Robin Hood saga (~5 pages, maybe?), especially the fight between Robin and Little John. Robin demands passage, Little John takes out an absolutely HUGE quarterstaff, and WHONK! nails Robin. Robin staggers, sees stars, then stiffens his spine and marches over to a conveniently placed rack of staves. He selects one, advances with grim determination, then SLAMS the quarterstaff down...across the river, and daintily tiptoes across.

One I used to pull out when I was younger and had a full beard:

--

(Two long-haired hippies across the table from each other)

Hippie One: "Got anything to eat in this place?"
Hippie Two: "Lessee.... eggs, oatmeal, spaghetti, pea soup..."
Hippie One: "Sounds good, man... can I have some..?"

(Hippie Two pulls over bowl, squeezes beard, drains above-named contents into bowl with the usual Martinesque sound effect) "SCRONNNCHH...!!!"

--

OK, nothing came out of my beard. But it was enough to see the look on folks' faces when I reached for it. Don Martin rocks. :-)

PS - Sorry I missed you this year at ConFusion. Any plans for ConClave this year...?

I especially loved Captain Klutz.

"So much for a lifetime of failure and shattered dreams! I'm a disgrace to my family, my friends, Wonder Woman...oh, the shame of it all!"

And on one of my several "Lists of Things I Am No Longer Allowed To Do At Hogwarts," I included the following:

"The boy's name is 'Ron Weasley,' not 'Captain Klutz.' Similarly, I am to refer to the Headmaster as 'Professor Dumbledore,' not 'Police Chief O'Freenbean.'"

'Don Martin's Guide to Obscure Comic Strip Sound Effects' stands out in particular. It was 1978 and I was on my 5th alpine bicycle tour. We were in the Edmonton train station waiting to re-board and my brother bought the Mad Magazine that had this particular article. We stood in line and he was reading this piece and started chuckling. When he got to Ironman sneezing in his iron mask and the onomatopoeia in question was "Ah.. Ahh.. Aaahhh... THOONOON!!". That finished him. I practically had to carry him back to our seats where he demanded my sister take the magazine away and not let him see any more. She began to read the article and the two of them were helpless, quivering blobs as the train glided out of Edmonton and hit the rails for Jasper. Many other pieces are worthy of note. The Fester and Karbuncle stuff, National Gorilla Suit Day, any Fine Thursday Afternoon at the Doctor's Office and of course the Kaptain Klutz series. And how about, "Really, Mr. Freenbeen, you're much to old to be playing with your food!"

My favorite is Fonebone's Stores. Man walks past 4 or 5 diffent types of stores, all owned by Fonebone, and with giant size items of what the store sells on the marquees (a pair of glasses, a shoe, etc). At the end, you see the Fonebone himself, who is large enough that all those marquee items actually fit him (and he is missing one shoe, his glasses, etc :-) For some reason, much as I love Capt. Klutz, that is the bit that most sticks in my mind.

Second to that is The Elevator Ride. A man is riding in an otherwise empty elevator. The elevator stops to let in this really beautiful woman. The man stops the elevator between floors, tells the woman it is broken and they will be stuck there a for while (and given his expression, you know he wants to make out as a way to pass the time). The top half of the woman jumps down to the floor: it is a pair of midgets on their way to the talent agency on the upper floor of the building.

Oh mymymy. Thanks for tickling my old neurons and reviving forgotten joy.

Superhero Sound Effects and Captain Klutz, but I've been on a Superhero jag for the past year. I need to find these again, my brother probably has the books.
