Just agreed to go to InConJunction the weekend of July 6-8. Author GOH: George R. R. frickin' Martin. There will apparently be another musical guest, the Gregory Morris Group. So this is looking pretty darn good.

I quit going to InCon many years ago, because at that time, it sucked. Maybe it's time to reconsider?

I'd say reconsider. I know that we, as a convention, had a bad run of several years, that the last several have been trying hard to come "back from the dead".

In a worst case? Come this year, enjoy the Tom-Centric programming, and if we still suck, don't come again. No bad feelings, as even we wonder what we need to do to keep up, and have our attendees enjoy it. The problem with the convention scene anymore is that it's evolving, in some cases, quicker than people can keep up.

I'll admit, 2005 was an eye opener (and I'll always have a phone conversation with Tom as a marker of "wow"). However, 2005, no matter what people thought of the hotel, or the guests (or that my media guest cancelled the thursday before the convention), the majority of people said they had FUN. Which meant I accomplished my primary goal.

Tom, sorry to go cheerleader here. :-)

Why do you think I put it up on the LJ, and mentioned the GOH, as well as the extra musical guest who isn't even on your website yet...? :) [squeezes into old cheerleading gear -- no, wait, I never had cheerleading gear]

I had a lot of fun at InCon '06... they've treated me/Wild Mercy very well the two years we've been there, and it was clear this year that they were working hard to make sure that the filkers in general were treated well and felt welcomed.

InConjunction is my "home" convention, because it's in my hometown, I know the entire committee, and I attended the first InCon at the age of 3 months...then I was working Security at the age of 7. So I've got a huge soft spot for InCon. So happy you'll be there!

Chances are, we have at least seen each other peripherally then. :-) I'm the one typically running around like a chicken that's lost its head, trying to make sure everything is "happening". 2005 was MINE. :-)

If you've ever attended the "Top 10 worst" movie panels, then you've seen me. No, not the good looking one, no, not the funny one. Yup, the "sidekick". :-P

*forehead wrinkles* Hoh boy...I've gotta know you then. And I think I know who you are, but I'm not going to guess and embarrass myself...I do that well enough at the con. ;-)

*HEH* I would assume. If you went to the Whose Line show, I'm the mad twit who tried to run the "Storytime" with a Harry Potter wand for a pointer. :-) And have helped with the Devival from year to year.

Hmmm...also been described as "The cute of a baby seal about to be clubbed".

Either way, if you think you know me, say Hi in July. I'm sacrificing a trip to Greece to go this year (well, that and monetary/passport things).

Oh yeah. I know who you are. Heh heh. And you probably know me...or at least my father. And probably my sister. LOL!

Can't wait for InCon...will be my first con of 2007...been sacrificing the others for an Ireland trip in June.

0.o Ok, am really curious now. Probably know you, or at least your father, probably your sister. Hmmm...

Yeah, be sure to say "Hey Per_solo!", that'll clue me in. :-)

LOL, one more hint, mostly because I'll probably forget to say anything in July...if I said that most people call my dad "Admiral Don," would that clue you in? I'm the eldest of his two girls. :-)

I went to Inconjunction in '03 and it wasn't bad (GOH some Star Trek folks) but then in '04 it was awful so I stopped going. I guess I'll have to try and come this year.

OT, but con-related

...of course, I'm planning on Indiana in MARCH, not July. But then, I don't know what I'd ask GRRM, and may have just ended up walking up and kicking him in the shins for killing off...oh, you name it. *g* So I suppose it's for the best. Have a good time!

There's still a faint possibility I might go to the Heinlein Centennial that weekend, but if I don't, I'll think seriously about trying InCon again. It will depend in large part on how other things in my life are going and what other stuff I line up to make demands on my time and money.

Speaking of George RR Martin:

I just saw that HBO optioned the entire Song of Ice and Fire. They are looking to do a full series of one book/year. Martin was hired as executive producer and will write at least one episode a season.

Duh!

I have trouble imagining the TV audience accepting a series where that many complex, well-developed characters end up dying horribly. Or more accurately, I have trouble imagining the network execs imagining the TV audience accepting it. This leaves me to fear that they would butcher the books into something where the characters we were supposed to identify mostly lived, and the characters that were destined to croak weren't given much screen time and/or were made unsympathetic.

On the other hand, there sure is a lot of stuff that could be wonderful visuals, if the FX folks and cinematographers are up to it (and they have the budget to do a real job of it).

If it was anyone else but HBO, I would be more worried. Also, I'm not sure how much pull Martin will have as executive producer, but I don't see him rolling over lightly on this.

Besides, the big death in the first book is essential to the rest of the plot - I can't see anyone wanting to do the show if it will have to change that much. The rest of the important deaths occur a couple of seasons in - I doubt that they would lose many viewers after those. If nothing else, they'd tune in to find out where the story was going to go from there

(yes, I'm being vague here - I don't want to drop any spoilers.)

Right now, it's a big wait and see.

I do find it interesting that it may be filmed in New Zealand. I wonder if this means that Weta could be involved
