Ain't watchin', don't much care. But I realize I am, if not solitary, at least outnumbered in this. So, open Oscar™ thread. Have at.

Update: The only one I cared about. Best Documentary: An Inconvenient Truth.

Solidarity, brother!

I'd rather gnaw my own arm off.

(Though I will gleefully participated in the red carpet fashion mocking tomorrow.)

Do Oscars even have meaning?

Define meaning. It certainly matters to those in the industry in that nominees and winners can command higher salaries and in that it allegedly provides peer recognition of their efforts. I'd argue it matters to some percentage of viewers, or else ABC wouldn't be airing them (or perhaps more to the point, the commercials alongside them which provides revenue to the network).

I'm not watching. I don't go to movies much myself, and I don't recall seeing anything that was nominated in any of this year's categories. If I'm interested at all its for the montage of the deceased members of the Academy and the winner of the Thalberg, but I can get the latter from news sources tomorrow and probably get the former from YouTube tomorrow.

I am not watching either! But then again, I am at Disneyworld, and stalking pirates in the Magic Kingdom > the Oscars.

Would like to see Scorcese finally win the damn thing, though.

(Also, if ye happen to have any spare cannon lyin' about, we could use some in this neck o' the sea.)

Yaaaar.

I'm recording it. Will find the memorial section to shed a tear or two. Also if anything becomes newsworthy.
Somehow, Axes, Swords & Knives on The History Channel became more interesting than the Barbra W pre-show.

Now up: Nature, then maybe last night's Star Trek before BSG

Not watching.
Writing m/f/m D/s threesome for novel that has to be sent in tomorrow.
Much more fun, since I haven't, you know, actually SEEN any of the movies except for Happy Feet.

I liked Happy Feet. I liked it when it was called Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Jesus Christ, Superstar too.

I am not watching the Oscars, as I do not have a television.

However, I take comfort in the fact that if anything interesting happens (e.g., Al Gore winning and announcing his candidacy for President) it will be up on YouTube in its entirety, inside of 24 hours.

Ditto on the not-watching. If I'm interested in the results, which I rarely am, I can always pick up the paper and get them a LOT quicker than losing several hours of my life when I could be doing things more productive. Which isn't to say that I actually end up doing such productive things. ;) Also, if there's any interesting bits, someone will tell me or show them to me.

I prefer classic Oscar The Grouch to the more mellow version we have now. Some people are just mean like that, it is called "life". You don't need to sugar coat it for kids. Did they ignore the death of Mr, Hooper? Nope, they used it to explain to kids that people die eventually, they go away and do not come back. Sesame Street used to be so much better than it now is.

Haven't watched in years. It would help if I saw any of the films nominated, but even when Return of the King won, I didn't care to watch. Nothing against Ellen DeGeneres, who is genuinely funny, but Hollywood's gift to itself is simply a bore.

That said, I am still hoping that Scorsese finally wins, simply because he should have a long time ago.

Wow. Think of that -- a nominated Pixar film lost. You could make a case that they're losing their touch... but I think you'd be wrong. There were several really, really good animated films last year. (And a larger-than-average crop o' crap, but you knew that would be the case.)

I was rooting for "Monster House" not only because it was a good film, but because my best friend, Vin Truitner, was a lead animator on the film and -boy- the behind-the-scenes info I got on that picture was amazing! (He even got me a "wrap T-shirt" created for the animators...)

Look him up on IMDB sometime; he's worked on some really great pictures! (Mostly "The Iron Giant".)

My friend Ms. Geek refused to vote for ANYTHING for Best Picture for the Annie Awards. She felt the nominees weren't worth the unemployment checks of the artists they fired to do the CGI with. I wouldn't go that far, but I will admit that I voted for the least lousy of what I considered an indifferent bunch.

Cars wasn't their best, in the long run. I'd like to reason that since Pixar's contract with Disney was coming to a close, they didn't want to waste a great story on them. Granted, I had a lot of fun watching it, but it wasn't there best.

However, I am rather annoyed that Monster House didn't win... That was ten times better than Happy Feet.

No, not watching the Oscars. Doing video edits for my annual BEST OF (THE PREVIOUS YEAR'S) CONSONANCE DVD for this years Interfilk auction (ConSonance is this coming weekend). It's aggravating my RSI, but I do expect to finish it. But instead of FIRE IN THE SKY it may turn out that I will be singing FIRE IN MY WRIST. :(

I actually got a good party invitation, but I'm here with you guys. 'Nuff said.

I enjoyed it; Ellen DeGeneris really was doing a great job and Al Gore's "big announcement" (but being "played off stage" by the orchestra before he could finish) was hiliarious...

It's a good excuse to get together with other movie geeks in the Twin Cities (most of us from CONvergence's con-comm), cook, eat, chat, and enjoy talking about film, in general.

The toughest part, I think, is that I'm the odd-man-out in terms of the types of film and music I like and some of my pals, locally, are pretty solid in their views.

Still, this year, I'd seen almost NONE of the nominees. Eh, doesn't matter. I always disagree with the Academy, anyway...

I, for one, was dissapointed.

I wanted Gore to open up a can of verbal whoop-ass on those two talentless white-trash Karl Rove Scrotum-suckers from "KAH-luh-RAH-dee" who started this whole "ManBearPig" nonsense that every Repugnican pieceashit loves to blather every time you try to start a discussion on Global Warming in place of anything that's of any actual relevance!

Personally, I forgave the Academy of most, if not all, of their trespasses when RotK rightfully won Best Picture a couple years back.

I did however miss most of tonight's show, unfortunately. While there were a few atrocities (as there always are) I was very happy to see Martin Scorsese finally receive his hard-earned recognition.

You also might be glad to know that Pirates of the Caribbean: DMC won an award.

I get that they only awarded RoTK for Best Picture. If they'd awarded FoTR with it, then they'd be forced to award it for the next to years if (as they did) the other two movies proved better than the first. And, if the movies proved horrible, they didn't want their precious Academy attached to what they might consider garbage.

What did PoTC win for? I avoid the award shows eagerly.

I watched, if only to root for Pan's Labyrinth (which walked off with an impressive 3 Oscars - not bad, though one of them should have been Best Foreign Film.)

They showed a brief clip of James Doohan during the Memorial. I got a bit misty-eyed...
