If you, like me, took the LJ Mojo test last month... well, the graphics for the test result have been replaced by some really, really disgusting stuff. As in, scatalogical, not work safe. I believe the term is "Goatse", from a defunct shock site. So go back and get rid of it, although you may want to wait to do it from home. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kshandra for the heads-up.

ETA: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ataniell93 for linking up with the shmott guy who did it. You can access your info from the meme there. So can everybody else. His attitude seems to be, "We thought it was cool, and fuck you for being stupid enough to trust someone like me."

Figured something like that would happen. Way too little effort went into the site for it to be anything but a joke.

Another friend took that test yesterday, and then went offline. It took me until this morning to find her and pull it down.

Lovely what some folks will do, isn't it?

Maybe I'm just some old fogie for thinking there's something wrong with the kind of behavior a person engages in ONLY online, because if he tried it in real life, people would kick his ass. But those kind of pranks fail to amuse me, and just leave me feeling vaguely disquieted and a little more cynical.

I want to tell such people I don't need their help with becoming an embittered cynic in my old age; I'm making quite a bit of progress on that all by myself.

Then I realize such feedback increases their enjoyment of having done it.

Hmph.

It's just more proof of the Greater Internet ****wad Theory put forth by Penny Arcade:

Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = Total ****wad.

I forget the original source (Campbell? Heinlein?), but a long time ago (40+ years, long before the Internet) I came across someone who wrote that the saying "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" should be modified to say "Immunity corrupts. Absolute immunity corrupts absolutely."

Since that time I've had several opportunities to witness various forms of immunity (normally through anonymity). CB radios, BBSs and now the Internet. These have shown that there is a certain amount of truth in the position that it's the immunity and not the power that corrupts. The amount of power held by various anonymous people in these venues is small, it's the fact that they have immunity to reprisal that is the temptation.

You know, the guy's a total dick, but if he'd spent some more time on this, he could've gathered some interesting data that could've driven a number of sociological papers...

Eeeew.

I'd better go dig mine up and delete it.

And then scrub my eyeballs with bleach...
