Wusik is having an extreme group buy. Basically, you kick in $1.95. If they get 150,000 buy-ins (they explain the math, and it is plausible, if not necessarily likely) between now and the end of the year... that's it. You get Wusikstation V3 (Windows version) and 2 GB of samples, a $100 value, for a buck ninety-five. Even if they don't make it, they promise a good discount.

And there's a new free program called Sonic Visualizer, for studying music files instead of just listening to them. Looks as if it has lots of potential.

Anything on your audio horizon?

Intriguing. I've been making good use of Audacity's spectrogram tool.

The live CD, http://www.studio-to-go.com/ , looks interesting for people who want to check out the hundreds of free audio programs on Linux, though if you're serious I'd recommend http://ubuntustudio.net/ or http://64studio.com/

Tom - What is Wusikstation V3? Their info on the page is lacking that key piece. (What's it do?)

Thanks!

It's an instrument plug-in... specifically, a hybrid sampler (using both actual samples and some synthesis in combination to make more complex sounds). Very popular, lots of samples available for it. Like any other VSTi, you'd load it into your MIDI program as a software synth and route MIDI notes through it.

Interestingly enough, the next major purchase I'm thinking of is a Takamine acoustic guitar for recording purposes. Really good sound, with a nice tone for mics and a built-in pickup for some variations. All for about $650.00 street price.

Oh, you meant regarding software? Lots that I want to get, but I think that the next serious purchase will be Digidesign's "Structure", their new sampler for Pro Tools. I've been needing a sampler, and one that fits into Pro Tools the way that Halion fit into Cubase would be perfect.

I want to get another 2 Gig into my Mac before the end of this year. But also on my shopping list are Digidesign's "Velvet" (electric piano), Native Instruments' "Akoustik Piano", and Arturia's "Prophet-V".

Incidentally, I downloaded Sonic Visualizer, but have yet to really play with it.

It's too late for you guys to get it, and I don't do a lot with MIDI since I don't know music notation...but on "Giveaway of the Day" I managed to snag a program called SLOUD that supposedly translates WAV files into MIDI notation. I haven't tried it, but it's bound to be more accurate than me trying to pound out a note on a keyboard and hoping it's close to something in tune.
