Date: 2007-06-18 12:30 pm (UTC)You won't be surprised that more than once I've been told that I shouldn't, oughtn't, better not, and )@(%^ing well better not do something.
The one thing my dad has never told me is that I can't do something, even something as insane as dreaming of being a published writer. It's a dream I'm still working on, but a dream I still have, and a dream he understands--for among other things, my dad made a F/SF reader of me, introducing me to Del Rey and Asimov. I remember sitting in his lap, watching original series Star Trek... not reruns, first runs. I remember being taken to see 2001: A Space Odyssey in its original theatrical run (boy, you don't think that will mess with a seven-year-old's head...!) and Fantasia in its 1971 re-release.
I was molded without being squashed, guided without being blindered. I don't just love my dad. I respect him, and that's something earned. Had my little girl lived, I would be honored to be even a tenth the father to her he was to me.
