Only sometimes, but I'm sure that's enough to plant the idea in all of those men who would otherwise be godly!

If they see me in business clothes too, I tend to dress a bit masculine, so I might also be tempting them toward the path of TEH GHEYZ. Even though they could also justify it as attempting to turn me straight.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have the wrong gods to pray to and a black cat to snuggle. (The cat wasn't intentional; she was just cute. And my mind was already corrupted.)

I agree that pamphlet is a load of hooey, but now I wonder how much of my feeling safe on campus is the fact that I weigh about 300 lbs.

Oh, and in case you weren't already angry enough today, found this courtesy of a Facebook friend: http://www.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2010/03/02/meanwhile-in-texas-american-taliban-isnt-hyperbole-anymore

And best of all, it's not even the chainsaw's fault! It's THEIR fault for making the chainsaw so horny.

In fact, I suggest a counter-poorly-xeroxed-leaflet saying the following, using the exact same flyingspaghettimonsterdamn logic:

"Scripture doth tell us to keep the Sabbath Day holy and to have no Gods before Him. If you are acting in a way that makes religion unattractive, thus tempting a person to abandon their faith and indulge in such sin, you are a participant in the sin. Some atheists would not have abandoned their faith if they had not equated such faith with assholes who can't stop trying to control people. So can we really say THEY were responsible for their eternal damnation?"

It's pure bullshit, of course. Atheism is simply the path of the reasonable. But if these people wanna wallow in guilt and call it a purpose, FUCK EM!!!

Oh, you BET I am.

Behind the reception desk and everything. And my employer is fine with it. A fitted jacket and trousers? Super! Jeans that don't look like jeans? Hey, they're a lot better-looking than the denim sported by 80% of the work force inside.

Of course, there's generally an Arctic chill out here, I often have on a bulky warm sweater and sometimes even a shawl. My lower half is also invisible to the general public unless they lean way over my counter.

If one of these idiots walked in here, I'd ask her to leave immediately. Don't you walk onto our company property and start harassing the employees!

Sorry, my burkha is at the cleaners.

That's the classic abuse's line, "You MADE me do it" and unless you want all women to walk around in a cloak of invisibility, (after all, a burhka will show her swaying as she walks, and you might see a feminine FOOT) this kind will ALWAYS use that line.

If my ad-copy skills were better, I'd put out a counter pamphlet -- "Do women have the right to exist?" That's really what they're trying to do; make sure nothing female impinges on their consciousness except one they can use at will.

I like the line "Have you thought about standing before the true and living god to be judged" - because I thought that on Judgement Day we would all be standing naked before the Lord.

And I would like to be standing next to George Clooney if possible.

I have friends who choose to dress in modest fashion for personal, religious and social reasons. And that's totally fine, it's their choice, and not one of them has then felt the need to hand me a pamphlet telling me I ought to do the same thing so I don't offend their God(s). How is this hard???

of someone who rebutted all of that garbage far better than I could. Kurt Vonnegut. I read the story some 30 years ago, so forgive me if I lose detail. I'm pretty sure it was in the "Welcome to the Monkey House" collection. A young man accosts a young lady because she is too "tempting" in public, goes home and tells his mother how this means he is called to become a preacher. When next he goes out, she confronts him about how all the temptation was in his mind, and demands an apology (which, being a nice upbeat fiction story, he gives, seeing the error of his ways, and then walks with her to the post office, so the whole town can see.)

While it is, in a sense, true that people's decisions can put themselves in more danger than they can handle, that pamphlet is absolutely ridiculous, and I am proud to say that my two daughters will *NOT* be exposed to that attitude growing up. *grins* In fact, I'll be willing to bet that if anyone troubles my older daughter (seven going on seventeen), they will pull back a bloody stump with no limbs attached. That girl has a MEAN right hook. :-)

I don't wear what I consider tight fitting clothing (AKA pants), and haven't for over four years. Actually, I wear what I'm sure the people handing out pamphlets like that would approve of--ankle length A-line skirts that are loose and flowy. I choose to do this mostly because of comfort (that and flowy skirts are awesome) rather than being "godly".

And you know what? I actually feel less protected from rape than if I wore pants. Pants you have to unbutton, unzip, and then somehow slide down, all the while making sure your victim doesn't get away. Skirts, on the other hand, are well known for being "easy access", and I personally think they're sexier than pants because they leave more to the imagination. Also, loose clothing provides better hand holds the same way things like long hair (which I also have) do. So, sorry pamphlet-lady, but I heartily disagree with your assertion that wearing loose clothing makes a woman less likely to get raped. That, and you're just generally a Not Cool person for distributing that kind of stuff to perfect strangers anyway. Mind your business.

On a humorous note, it reminds me of something the actor who plays Lister on Red Dwarf said. He claimed that the kilt is the manliest thing you can wear because it means he's ready to shag anything at anytime. All he has to do is lift it.

Seriously though, you're correct. I remember in Italy a court ruled that a woman who wears jeans can't be raped because it is so hard to remove them. The ruling was pure bullshit of course. But those people and these people have the same backwards idea that if a woman is raped she's partially to blame.

It would not surprise me to find out that the pamphlet says, "You Are Wrong," but fails to explain what would be Right.

I would also like to note that I am insulted by the implication that males are mindless beasts, who will ravish a woman at the mere sight of a well-turned ankle. I guess "crafted in God's image" means we look like Him, but we aren't as smart, or as ethical.

Talk about getting the short end of the stick.

I went to Mardi Gras a few years ago and there were the usual street-parade-preachers telling everyone they were sinning and going to hell. I was wearing my tribal bellydance getup - this particular one was pretty much layers & layers & layers of clothing, the only thing really being exposed being my belly - and the guy yells at me, "Put some clothes on."

I should have replied, "I'm already wearing 10 pounds of skirts, what more do you want?"

The idea that men can't control themselves in the face of femininity results in things like Saudi Arabia. I have no interest in living in such a country, nor offending my male friends with the notion that they are animals with no control over themselves in the presence of women. Were I male, I'd be horrifically angry at that idea.

I am horrifically angry at that idea. I can't seem to remember any of those hundreds of rapes I must have committed, inspired to sexually-based violent crime by looking at cute women over the years -- especially the ones in harem/bellydancing costumes. Or T-shirts. Or military uniforms. Or power suits. Or khakis. Or Hogwarts costumes. Or Victorian garb. Or or or or or.

A lot of it comes back to men being afraid of women.
