This is a terrible blow for me...my father (who bore more than a passing resemblence to Mr. Pavarotti) also passed away this year after a very similar bout with cancer, so to lose this great voice in the same way rattles me. Pavarotti was my father's favorite singer, so I literally grew up listening to him shake my soul with "Nessun Dorma."
You can talk about his contributions to music, his uncontainable personality, his showmanship, his art, his everything, but these words from Leonard Bernstein pretty much sum it up for me.
"The key to the mystery of a great artist is that for reasons unknown, he will give away his energies and his life just to make sure that one note follows another... and leaves us with the feeling that something is right in the world."
What a wonderful quote; I spend much of my life and energy for that same purpose. The world is a sadder, less beautiful place for Mr. Pavarotti's leaving it; thank you for posting.
In the words of an old His Masters Voice advertisement They are gone, but they are still here... Thank heavens for the gramophone. Pavarotti will still be heard, appreciated and compared against his peers for years to come.....
I am officially in mourning for one of the world's greatest living (now dead) treasures. Pavarotti was one of my favorite musicians. I am a vocalist, finishing a second degree in music, and this is traumatizing. How sad and, yet, how good that he is out of pain. I will light a candle for you dear sir. Thanks for letting us know Tom.
While I am not a huge fan of the musical style in which he was a master, I did attend a concert once with a friend and I must say he blew me away. The tone, control, and emotion he sang with was truly awesome.

Pavarotti and my mother are among the very few.
