Dammit, it's my own fault. I was too caught up in stuff over the weekend to notice this, which I knew was coming out. Fortunately, [livejournal.com profile] hughcasey was on the ball.

Dayumm.

I feel X3 worked. It wasn't what it could've been. It definitely has problems. But I don't think it sucked.

Superman Returns sucked. Worse, it bored. And I was in Meijer today, and happened to see a well-discounted vinyl SR lunchbag, and they were quite true to the actual appearance of Brandon Routh, and no wonder it's well-discounted.

Eh, whatever works. Me, I thought it sucked. The whole Phoenix/Dark Phoenix saga was a watershed story of comics history, and all the director and writers could think to do was that? This after claiming to care about the property and the continuity. Nope, sorry. Sucked.

To be fair, the Dark Phoenix Saga would be a nightmare to translate accurately into film. They'd have to introduce space travel, space pirates, aliens, and a mountain of other things that the comic had had years to develop and incorperate before the saga came along. One has to keep in mind that a film has only 2-3 hours tops to get a story across, while a comic has about 10-12+ issues, not counting crossovers.

I liked X-3. Sure, it wasn't the Phoenix Saga, but it was a ton of fun and a good story, nonetheless.

(shrug) Comics was the right medium for that tale, sure. Thing is, if movies aren't the right medium? Don't use it. Look at Lord of the Rings, for example. If you haven't read the books, you don't know what hobbits are, where Mordor is, or why you're talking about events that happened ten thousand years ago as though they're relevant now. The director and the screenwriters used the time they had to make it all make sense, to make these things relevant to people who had no background in the story. They could tell the story using their medium, and they did.

Basically? There are plenty of X-Men tales in canon that they could have told very easily, stories that wouldn't have required the background of the Dark Phoenix story. They could have told one of those stories rather than misuse a comics icon.

It won't suck. Downey is too good an actor to ever suck. The camera work is great. There is even a little feel of the icninc often missing from Iron Man in the comics. And I'm sure that the armor will look better when the CGI is finished. But right now, the armor seems a bit silly in a way that nothing did in the Spider-films or the better Bat-films. It's certainly not Batman and Robin silly, but it doesn't quite win me over.

What really looks interesting in the retrofitting of his origin from Vietnam to Afghanistan (which recent comics have done as well). No super-hero has been more connected to the politics of his time than Iron Man, and that could give the film an edge if used right. Or could make it jinogistic as any Stan Lee Cold War comic.

But I am cautiously upbeat.

Hooray for Marvel taking their properties into their own hands... This certainly looks promising, and I've never been all that interested in Ironman.

By the by, I never caught a comment for your views on the Dark Knight teaser.

Noooo . . . not the Black Sabbath version . . .

Aside from that, yeah, pretty frigging cool. Downey looks like a truly great Stark.

Just out of curiousity, what version were you hoping for? I could see maybe the one he did with Therapy? on the Nativity in Black I disc... Outside of that, there are no respectable covers of the song.

I wasn't wanting that song at all. It's not about the Iron Man of the film, and using it here is inappropriate.

The ironic thing is that if they hadn't used it, everyone *not* annoyed by it being there would be ranting about how they didn't use the song in the trailer... Silly people.

Why is it inappropriate? Taken on a basic level, it's about some bloke saying "I am Iron Man" and going on a rampage of metal-fueled destruction, which fits with the trailer. And it's hilarious!

If the band objected, that might make it a different story. But until I find out about them objecting, I'll definitely headbang along to that.

I would imagine that both Black Sabbath and whichever cover versions they use in the movie (I'd use several, myself) are going to be very well-paid for it. And, what [livejournal.com profile] fuuberry said. It's too perfect not to use it.

On the other hand, I remember with bemused retching the animated Swamp Thing series, which used as theme music an astonishingly stupid parody of "Wild Thing". "Swamp Thing... you are a-ma-zing...."

[Ozzy Osborn's House.]
Ozzy: Kids! Great news! They wanna use one of our fooking songs for a comic book movie!
[Blank stare from the kids.]
Ozzy: For Marvel. Guess which one!!!

... I dunno Ozzy, which of your songs has sounded like an add for them for decades...

It is, however, a very good "stomp on the bad guys heads" song. A purely instrumental version of it would make good background music. (And I can't understand what they're saying in that song anyhow - I wouldn't notice the difference.)

If you haven't seen it, Google for Iron Man clips. There's some "behind the scenes" stuff where spies literally hid in the bushes & filmed them filming the movie & got some GREAT unretouched footage of the suit. And lemme tell ya, it looks GREAT.

Nice.

Not much changed from the Comic-Con footage, I think the video camera shot and the 1 day to make my missile bit were the most obvious.

And they teased the Iron Man music by putting in some Filter instead? Hey Man, nice shot?

Looks great, but it will have more merchandising potential than Transformers. There were at least 3 versions of the armor meaning at least 3 actions figures. Fortunately I've become immune to noticing shameless plugs and merchandising. I'm going to see this movie at least twice even though I own less than a dozen Iron Man comics. As long as it's better than Iron Man TAS we saw in the 90s that is.

I hope we get to see War Machine in the sequel.
